US Midterm Election watch along thread

According to Electoral-vote.com

Thanks for that. The explanation in the link should be helpful for most people. The small margin just reinforces how much GOTV efforts matter.

I suggested such a scenario two years ago and was roundly poo-poo’ed for my troubles. How dare I indulge in such unsubstantiated pie-in-the-sky speculation. Find the smelling salts.

The Arizona Midterms are never going to be over. Ever.

I really really hope you meant “pooh-poohed.”

Some days on here…what’s the difference?

Pooh is an interjection, meaning disdain, disgust, contempt. Poo is an item one collects while walking a dog.

Again, on the SDMB, and the chimpanzees who swing through here…

But let’s not digress further.

today is the special election for virginia. this is for the seat that was held by donald mceachin.

The district looks to be pretty solidly blue, and McEachin had won re-election with 65% of the vote last November. The Democratic candidate, Jennifer McClellan, had previously succeeded McEachin in the state senate. The Republican candidate, Leon Benjamin, lost to McEachin in elections for the House seat in 2020 and 2022.

jennifer mcclellan has won the race. we are now at a full house and senate.

A Democratic Congressman from Rhode Island just resigned his seat, effective June 1:

Rhode Island has a Democratic Governor so this is a wash at least. (Unless RI is one of the oddball states)

I don’t think governors appoint House members to vacancies. Unlike Senate seats, they have to be filled via special election.

Just googled to confirm:

The Constitution provides for vacancies in the House of
Representatives in Article I, Section 2, clause 4:

When vacancies happen in the Representation from
any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall
issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies.

It’s a solid blue district from what I’ve read.

And putting it off till June probably means it won’t have much effect on votes in the House?

A vote to increase the debt limit is going to have to happen sometime this summer if we’re going to avoid default. Given how close the margin is in the House and how divided Republicans are on strategy, one vote could very well make a difference.

I’d hope they let leadership know and had all of their ducks in a row before the announcement.
