I think that’s a generation or two away. What I worry about is a right-wing populist government that cozies up to fascists and rides to power on allowing people to spread disease because masks and needles upset them. It’s baffling to me that Canadians can look at the right-wing buffoonery that’s currently in vogue and say “sign me up for some of that, Premier Smith! Mmm-mmm good!”
The Republicans are openly declaring that Democracy only counts if they win, and some of them have stated that the goal is to get into power and stay in power permanently.
And our last premier wrote to Ottawa on behalf of Republican governors, went on Fox and OAN to argue in favour of his pro-disease policies, and saw fit to attend the Republican (formerly National) Prayer Breakfast. When I look at Republicans I see the CPC and UCP’s futures: imagine a clown shoe, stomping on a human face forever.
I understand that. As many problems as Trudeau may have as PM, I’m always glad it wasn’t Harper or some Harper-lite in charge when Trump won the election. I can’t imagine any of the current crop of Conservative leaders actually calling him on any of his bullshit, and standing up for Canada. They’d all be too busy currying his favor in order to shore up their support among their own Crazy Wing.

Wisconsin Republicans have pretty clearly indicated their plan to use an Orban-like approach. Use the imbalance of voter geographical distribution to insure permanent minority control of state government.
To the uninformed observer it still looks like democracy. But to me it clearly shows that today’s Republican Party is more interested in power than it is in making a better democracy.
Had a run in with a MAGA dork today. Guy was parked at a Sonic w/ about 30 different MAGA type flags in the ground, his van full of Bible verses and gun imagery.
Couldn’t help myself. I pulled in behind and honked my horn - MAGA dork was in the van listening to his shitty heavy metal, you know, like a true warrior for God should be.
He comes out, I roll down my passenger window.
“Yeah.”
"I don’t know what all this is about… " waving my hands, indicating the flags, “… but if you’re doing this in the service of the American Antichrist, Donald Trump…” he startles, then starts to laugh, “… you may wish to know that MAGA will twist and writhe in pain as they burn in Hell, having consigned themselves to the Hands of an Angry God.”
He stops laughing, irritation growing.
“… Jesus was a God who expressed his divinity via vaccinations, and here you are using him to defend the very guns used to murder schoolchildren. Good fucking luck!”
I pull away, he shouts something at the back of my car. It’s a Sonic, though, so I have to turn a circle and pass him again, which I did so with relish, arm upraised, middle finger stretched out in a gesture that even Jesus would’ve understood, and to which… assuming Christianity is correct… I guess I will have to answer for.
I pull out onto Potranco, headed towards 151, and… passing him again… I honk my horn and give the one-finger salute, keeping it raised as I approached the highway.

I have on a few occasions pointed out to such people that the only irredeemable sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which includes attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to the devil. And that is what they do when they use Jesus to promote hate.
Now, I don’t really believe any of that, but at the same time, neither do they.
Last week here in CA 47 my wife had to guard the door to KP’s office as the protesters outside screamed at her. They were there because Jane Fonda was supposed to rally the canvassers but thankfully they cancelled - so yes I was scared for her. (The crowd was extra large because being in the midst of a huge Vietnamese population, we had additional protesters sent by the local State Rep.)
The next day, helping out at the KP event with Gavin, I was screamed at for being a “communist baby-killer” and “rebuked in the name of Jesus,” for supporting Prop 1, which struck me as hilarious and though I know I shouldn’t react I could not help bursting out laughing at the woman.

California’s 47th Congressional District, which was redrawn for this election. Katie was first elected from the 45th, which was more south OC but they moved the lines and she now has Huntington Beach which means, so lots of new constituents and opposition.
Last summer or in ‘21 there were punches thrown at a town hall in a park. Our area is changing a lot and thus there is a lot of MAGA resentment.
If DJT is correct in being arrested/indicted (see below) then this Tuesday will see the most severe test of the “MAGA will erupt in violence” hypothesis since J6.
