I did not read the bulk of this thread. That’s not stopping me from commenting.
In my state Cory Booker won big as expected. Neither side put any money into the race. I didn’t see one commercial. Even now I’m struggling to name his opponent.
In Congress the big money race was Tom Kean vs Rebecca Bennett. Inundated with commercials and ads everywhere. Kean disappeared for 3 months in the middle of the campaign. The district is kind of purple to begin with. I knew it was a loss for Kean before the polls closed when the local station reported his election night event was private and not open to reporters or the public.
Unfortunately Chris Smith won easily. He has been in office since 1981 and there was very little opposition.
The shocker was Jeff Van Drew losing. I hadn’t heard a hint about that district being up for grabs.
Van Drew is a vile rabid MAGAt. It’s great to see him go. Tom Kean is an empty suit who tried to ride Trumps coattails even though he doesn’t seem enthusiastic about it. Chris Smith has clashed with Trump in the past to the point that Trump called for him to be primaried a couple of cycles ago. He’s an old school Republican who doesn’t seem to like Trump but he’s still a Republican who votes party line.
You know, if part of the message is that it’s okay to be “an old school Republican who sometimes clashes with Trump but mostly votes the party line”, that’s a really good outcome. Maybe it will prop up the spines of some other Republicans to object to Trump’s worst excesses.
Shame on all the Repubs who knew he was insane all along but went along with him up to now, out of fear for their careers. Let this be a lesson to the kids-- if you do or support what you know is the wrong thing because you think it’s right for you, it will backfire on you eventually.
I saw a clip of Asmongold (big right wing streamer) and, shortly before rage quitting the stream for the night, he berated a chatter for saying that Asmongold had previously voted Republican. He insisted that he’d never actually said that he had voted Republican.
History is about to be rewritten in real time. No one will have ever been a Trump supporter.
I’m cautiously optimistic that we won’t see any rat fuckery during a lame duck session. Republicans seem deflated by the scale of the loss and probably want to spend as little time in DC as possible. Plus, I can’t see all the Republicans that Trump fucked over (Cornyn, Tillis, Kennedy, Collins, etc.) going along with it. As you sew. . .
I can only hope that, FINALLY, a lot of Americans are realizing Trump’s utter disregard and scorn for the welfare of the people whose country he was sworn to defend not just militarily, but economically, and in every conceivable way. His stupidity and his ego has created an economic stress in this country that is unforgivable. MAGA’s Trump led attack on democracy in general and women in particular is totally contrary to everything this nation is supposed to stand for. My great wish is for him to live long enough to see the complete destruction of his power structure and his well deserved infamous place in history!
