First time Michigan (#15) made the pre-season poll in a long time. 12 years according to the team’s website. It has been a long dry spell for someone grew up during those few years when Michigan was a national player.
The listed teams just get knocked off for the first half of the season. Basketball polls are the worst of any . One team after another gets knocked down.
At this point, I think the polls have my Tar Heels overranked. We certainly have talent, but there are serious questions at PG and about our ability to shoot the 3.
However, by late March/early April, IF this team develops to match its potential, 4 might be too low a ranking.
Nah, not if they follow college ball at all. In last year’s final poll (taken after the tourney), the only western teams that were ranked were Gonzaga (13th, lost a ton of players, not picked to win their conference this year), Washington (ended 16th, currently 13th, might be a bit better), UCLA (was ranked 18th, now ranked 28th, lost a lot of talent esp. in the backcourt), Arizona State (was 19th, lost their best player), and Arizona (was 25th, lost 2 of their best 3 players and have a decent amount of program upheaval.) Mainly, it comes down to their being just a few potentially good teams, all of whom lost a lot of known talent. By the end, the western third of the U.S. will probably end up with 4 or 5 ranked teams, but be lucky to get any past the sweet 16.
