User icon toolbar now (worse as) a sidebar

It has the entire title. It just wraps around to the next line.

Or are you wanting it to all be on the same line? They could make it wider, but where do you stop? If you try to fit, for example, " A President Adam Kinzinger (R) ends this whole seven-year nightmare and “brings the temperature down in the room”, right? anyone else?" the notification area will take up the entire screen.

I suppose the easy fix would be to give the user the ability to set it to the size that works for them.

I know it has the entire title and wraps to a second line. I was specifically referring to the first line (I even used the words “first line”) as a way to talk about the width. On my phone it wraps to the second line much sooner in the sentence than in your screenshot.

The answer to your question of do I want everything on a single line is no. But this quoted portion about the notification area taking up the entire screen is relevant because on my phone it does. Notice how on my screenshot the notification area takes up just about the entire screen? The text is squished because there’s not as much horizontal space for text now that the icons have been moved from the top to the side.

That fix would not help me because it already takes up pretty much the entire screen. A real fix would let me move the icons back to the top how it used to be. If not all icons fit, a solution similar to Windows notification icons in the system tray could be workable. (The last icon becomes a “More…” icon that allows access to all the remaining lesser-used icons.)

Can you see my screenshot above? It’s not cropped; that’s the entire display of my phone. It’s a full screenshot.

The real issue is that the sidebar works fine on a PC or tablet. It doesn’t work fine on a phone because the screen is so tiny, and especially because any phone’s aspect ratio in portrait mode is narrower than even a typical tablet display in portrait mode.

On the other hand, having the icons across the top on a portrait-mode phone doesn’t work as well as on a PC because fewer entries fit on the screen. So which is more important? More entries, or more words in each entry? One could argue that most users have a pretty good idea of which threads they’ve participated in, so the snippet of title displayed just needs to be a memory jogger, not a complete verbatim rendering of the entire title.

I wonder how the new style display looks on a phone in landscape mode?

The SDMB in general is horrible in landscape mode on a phone.

You at least understand what I’m saying, correct? You can see how it is actually worse for me now even though it is still functional? I feel like @Joey_P doesn’t understand what I’m saying.

It was only in your 5th post, #20 in the thread, that you included the very important word “phone”. And even then it was buried on the middle of the post in the middle of a sentence.

I never read the Dope on anything smaller than a laptop. Up unti that moment I thought you were reading on a full-sized PC too. And in that context I had no idea what you were beefing about. Until you finally wrote the word “phone”, and I noticed it, and my lightbulb went on.

Yeah, that’s my bad. But even after I posted a screenshot of my phone I’m having trouble interpreting his replies to me.

I only surf the dope on my phone, usually while having a smoke break since I don’t smoke in the room with the computer. I mainly dictate all my posts using google voice. It’s pretty awesome, actually. (This particular post I’m typing on a keyboard at my computer and I hate it. Typing…yuck!)

One of the big selling points of discourse was that it works much better on a phone than the old forums could ever dream of. That is still true, but this particular UI change is worse for phones.

I did not even notice your screen shot was of a phone while I was evaluating it. I was just looking at the size of the pop-up versus the overall image, the pop-up’s contents to validate that you and I were even talking about the same thing, and admiring the odd colors of the very different theme than I use.

Only when I saw the word “phone” in your words did I look carefully at the chrome across the top of your screenshot and say “By golly that is a phone! Who’d use one of those to read the Dope?”

I do not mean to sound critical of you. It’s just one of those comedic misunderstandings where two people’s unexamined default contexts are so different that they talk past one another until somebody finally throws the penalty flag and they stop to discuss why they aren’t communicating.

In general I find voice dictated posts to be very hard to understand. They’re usually quite obvious, and quite bad as written prose goes. You must be a real pro at this to have yours make any kind of sense versus being a stream of consciousness mess.

Ha! 100%.

I don’t know how well my written prose comes across since I’ve switched to voice dictation almost exclusively, but I made the switch a few years ago, shortly after I got this phone. That was in…2019, I think? My biggest annoyance is that it recognizes all punctuation except semicolon – see, it typed out the whole word right there! – and overusing semicolons is one of my weaknesses.

If I recall correctly, the discourse upgrade was in 2018. I hated it at the time and pretty much didn’t use the boards at all for a year. But then when I got a phone I understood. Before this phone I just had a flip phone, and I only had that so I could call for roadside assistance in an emergency.

One of the downsides of adopting a smartphone so late is that the on-screen keyboard is my kryptonite. I have no aptitude for it.

For some reason, I always have a blue circle with 2 on the reply arrow. Doesn’t matter if I’ve replied or read the replies. It’s never less than 2.

The little dismiss button/check thing at the bottom should dismiss that. At least I think that’s what that’s for.

Thanks!

Courtesy of an old post by a Discourse plugin user, this is what the previous menu looked like, with the Likes (heart) notification disabled and replaced by his own custom mini-Q*Bert-level icon/tab.

There really wasn’t more room for the titles, because in the new layout they can wrap to two lines whereas before it only accepted one.

The reason they turned the menu on its side is, indeed, beause of the proliferation of (possible) icons, and the fact that there are plugins that can add even more. There’s an example on that thread I linked to with like TWELVE icons showing.

Obviously, that’s an extreme example for demonstration purposes, but it does handily show why the horizontal tabs layout just wasn’t sustainable.

My lizard-brain wants to hate the change, too, because it’s unfamiliar and feels drastic, but it’s a Discourse-wide adjustment that was made for Reasons™, and if I step back and consider it objectively I eventually have to admit that it really doesn’t negatively impact anything other than my comfort level / muscle memory, and those are fleeting. This too shall pass.

Sorry! An Imgur URL with a slash at the end let the post go through over the “can’t embed media…” bug), but apparently turned it into a video URL! It wasn’t, it was a GIF. And now I can’t fix it, or even remove it from that post with an edit, without the bug cropping back up.

Except on mobile, where there is less space to display thread titles, plus a bunch of wasted white space unless your specific board has tons of icons.

I’m still not seeing that (“less space”).

I just checked, and on my phone the menu looks identical to the one I see on my desktop. It’s a tall column, with each notification’s thread title wrapped to two lines. In the old layout they were shown as one line each, so the length of the title string really hasn’t changed significantly. It might even be slightly longer now.

The username at the beginning eating into the space is the main thing that shortens the title, but I think those were there in the old layout too.

(Edit: OK, not identical. The menu is narrower on my phone than on my desktop, so it can’t fit as long a title. But that’s a width issue, the old layout would’ve suffered even more. …That’s in portrait mode, i should disclaim. I can’t imagine using the site in landscape on a mobile device, it’d be like peering at it through a mail slot.)

That is absolutely not true.

Here’s what my phone looks like now. It’s much more squished with that sidebar taking up so much room. And much of that room it’s taking up is wasted on empty white space.

The thread title display used to be much wider when there was no sidebar.
