I’ve completely changed the way I look at ATMB. On the fora preview page all you can see is the lead thread (the one with the most recent posts).
And I’m getting these damn SHOCKS when I see a username in that thread title.
It’s like The Washington Post decided to just print the headline of some obituary front-page over-the-flap. Like a shot of cold water down the back in August.
May I make a suggestion, Arnold? This is the second thread I’ve seen in as many days, and the thread title “User” so and so has been banned seems unneccesarily harsh. Are they all heroin addicts?
I guess you can’t say “Member” X has been banned, because they’re no longer members, but wouldn’t “former member” X work just as well?
I really support this new system of detailing the reason’s for a Doper’s banning. Not because it gives people another opportunity to pile on, but because it demonstrates quite clearly just how stupid and/or openly offensive you have to be before you get banned, and how a banning is virtually never simply the result of a single offense.
Someone who doesn’t know a Doper’s history might look at a banning and wonder whether it was really justified, but these threads, IMO, allow everyone to see that such decisions aren’t taken lightly or capriciously.
