Users Who End Posts with Their Names

I might have to get this FoxReplace just so “class act” shows up on my screen the same way I read it, “pile of steaming monkey shit.”

On another note, back when Hissyfit had message boards, signing your posts was a bannable offense (after warning, of course) because the mods felt that it was boring and redundant, and reflected poorly on the poster because the need to sign a post which was already attributed spoke of a ridiculous amount of egoism.

I loved it.

I find it kind of annoying, as well, but not enough to start a thread about it (though I guess I support those who do). One thing that’s clear, though, is that these threads never work.

So, I guess the people who object to it could go the grassroots approach, and start signing their posts with “Regards, [theirname]” any time they find themselves in a thread with Shodan. Not stalking him, or anything trollish; just being slightly more regardful when they’re conversing with him. I have no idea if it would actually work as a deterrent or not (it probably wouldn’t), and it would definitely be childish and petty, but it wouldn’t be outright trollish that I can see, and would at least be novel.

Not gonna do it, though. I just like watching this stuff.

You owe me $4.95

I saw the note from GFactor on prev page and had a brilliant idea.

For portions of posts that go outside the sdmb rules, just include a link to that post where it is ok. This should be a win-win for all.

My sig:

  1. It’s not a brilliant or new idea, but I won’t hold that against you.
  2. The “sig” that you linked to wouldn’t necessarily violate any rules unless you did it too much or as part of a broader stalking, trolling, or harassment campaign, or the post managed to violate some other rule. If you’d ended the quoted post with what you linked to, and that was the only example of it, I wouldn’t have noted it.
  3. If it did violate a rule, linking out to it wouldn’t help. In fact, it would make it worse, because the fact that you had to link out to it suggests you knew it unacceptable. I’d have a harder time giving you the benefit of the doubt.
  4. Because you’ve violated no rules, I want to be clear that this is an advisory opinion: No warning issued.
  5. Gfactor–small f. Not a big deal. Just sayin’.

Ok. Gfactor 1, the “Raft” 0.

More brilliant ideas to follow.

Not Shodan, But Rather A Different Poster That Normally Does Not Have A Sig But Does In This Case, But Isn’t Guaranteed To Have One On Any Subsequent Posts, But Might

A bit of a long read, though it does get interesting in the middle; still, it loses its way at the end.

Am I allowed to steal TTR’s idea and steal Shodan’s sig?

Regards,
Sh**an

I used to do it. I don’t anymore, because I found out it drives people nuts. I don’t understand why it drives people nuts, though. The argument of the OP is a non-starter. Signatures at the end of correspondence are often–probably usually–redundant. If you didn’t know who the letter was from before you got to the end of the letter, then there was something very strange about the letter I guess.

Not to mention the return address on the outside of the envelope, making the signature at the end triply (or two-and-a-halfly at least, since the letter and the envelope can get separated) redundant.

Whatever your reasons are for signing off with some sort of boiler plate salutation, on a message board whose formatting already includes a boiler plate of your identity for you (and, which also has a pre-determined field for such things, properly called a “signature”) must be driven by some sort of compulsion or other idiosyncrasy.

To those that realize the unnecessary effort of including such a thing on every single post of theirs, in a highly informal setting, the practice is baffling. To those that don’t liked to be baffled, they’re forced to default to their prejudices in order to make sense out of something that doesn’t offer any in the mind of those that have been baffled. Some choose to think such a person is stupid. Others, like myself, are mildly annoyed, but chalk it up to just being weird or archaic.

That said, repetition and redundancy, in all its forms, can be unsettling, annoying or obnoxious (to varying degrees), depending on the intent of those that are committing said things. If it doesn’t have a good beat, or isn’t something you can dance to, I say, cut it the fuck out.

Traditional “correspondence” was a message addressed from one person to a specific individual. Signing the message was a courtesy to that individual. Furthermore, a traditional letter wasn’t framed and headed with the name of the sender. It might be sent within an envelope with a return address, but the envelope would be thrown out when the letter was opened, and it might not be at all obvious whom a letter was from without a name and a signature. In addition, you wouldn’t usually send thousands of letters to the same person, unless you were a stalker.

The typical message board poster posts hundreds or even thousands of posts within a year, the posts are from one to many, and every post is framed with the sender’s name in bold at the top. Signing is unnecessary, repetitive, and annoying.

The funny thing is, when TPTB nearly took away the whole “Regards, douchebag” thing, poor **Shodan **threw such a pathetic whinging hissy fit you would have thought he was a little 8 yr old girl who had her Barbi stolen. It was fucking hilarious.

In my case, it bothers me because it adds nothing to the forum except noise.

And you know, I think it’s fairly telling of just how irritating the practice is that we get these threads on a regular basis.

Yup - tells us who the whiners are.

Shodan

Yup. So did the Black Death.

Never seen the Black Death Pitted. Apparently the whiners on the SDMB aren’t bothered by their own fleas.

Regards,
Shodan

Regards Gfactor.

I think you may be misunderstanding my posts. I am expressing my regards to and salutating our esteemed Shodan. I hope you do not have a problem with this.

Regards

Gfactor

I’d say you haven’t been paying attention in this very thread, then.

In Shodan’s case (given the history of all of this), I regard it as trolling.

All trolls are assholes. Not all assholes are trolls.
