Using a Wii for Netflix streaming

I understand this is possible, but I’m curious as to how painless it is to set up and how user-friendly it is.

Is there a particular way you need to connect the Wii?

Is the connection from PC to Wii wireless (or could it be)?

How is the user interface?

How do you pause movies?

Thanks for any help,

mmm

I do this. My Wii uses my wireless, it was painless - I just had to add my Wii to the account and go to the Wii “store” to download the free Netflix program.

I pause by hitting the A button on the wiimote

Honestly, it is extremely simple. I also connect to the wireless router. I have a 3 mbs download speed and the picture is still very good. Aside from live sports and the occasional show, I rarely watch live tv anymore.

I agree; it was pretty easy. The only hitch we ran into was that our Wii needed some sort of update, which wasn’t working properly and was rather a pain. I don’t even remember now what it was, but we found some info online on the error we had run into, and followed the directions.

It’s really easy to navigate within the Netflix app; same with searching, rewinding, and fast-forwarding. It even remembers where you left off your program, so that if you want to spread something over a couple of nights, you can just hit “Resume” when you’re ready.

Really simple. You can connect your wii to a wireless network just by giving it the network name and password. Then you download the Netflix program (for free) and perhaps an update or two. Tada! It’s really easy to browse through your queue and the various suggestions and genre lists that Netflix makes for you. Searching is more tedious since you have to type by selecting each letter one at a time with the wiimote. Usually I search and manage my queue on the computer. Playback is also really easy – most things are just point and click with “A”, and there are a few more specific buttons that can save you from pointing all the time. While watching a movie, “A” is play/pause, “B” exits the playback. Seeking is a bit fiddly though, but like on the PC it’ll always remember where you left off.

You don’t connect the Wii to your PC - you connect it to your network (via router).

After you connect the Wii to your network, go into the Wii store and get the Netflix app (it’s free). When you start it up, it’ll direct you to go to the Netflix website (via your PC) to enter a 4 digit code (to authorize that the Wii is yours). Then you’re done - it connects to your Watch Instantly queue and you’re ready to go.

Just as a tip, when we set our Wii up with Netflix, it was slow to buffer and would outplay the buffer it did build up, leading to a less-than-ideal viewing experience. We pretty much eliminated this by changing the channel our router broadcasts on. The higher the channel, the better a response we got.
