Using Email for Evil

I’m getting very frustrated with myself. I am committing a major drinker’s error (never do something drunk that you wouldn’t do sober)… with email!

Recently I find myself writing things to people that I would NEVER say to them in person. I know, it’s the nature of the medium, but I need to stop myself. I don’t want to offend or alienate my friends but it seems that I sometimes do just that. It’s really hard to convey “sarcasm” or “good-natured ribbing” in 12 pt. Courier.

So I’m not really looking for advice - but do you ever find yourself doing the same thing?

Sucks to your assmar.

Shoot, shoot, shoot, I am so sorry. I meant to post in MPSIMS. Please move me accordingly. SORRY!

This is a question, no?

Work like you don’t need the money…
Love like you’ve never been hurt…
Dance like nobody’s watching! …(Paraphrased)

Here is a rule that is tough to follow. I have broken the rule. But when I have followed the rule things sure felt better later: Never post angry.
It’s rough. You see something that makes you want to spit fire–then return some of it. If you can force yourself to hang back you’ll buy yourself time to cool down. Then you can come back a post something that won’t haunt you for the next month.

Send an e-mail to anyone you think you might have offended and say, “Wow, I was drunk… When I woke up and looked at my sent file - Yikes! I hope you didn’t take offense… If you did, I’m sorry!”

Then check into a rehab clinic so anyone who was pissed at you will feel really bad for getting pissed at someone who has a “disease” instead of being simply uncouth!

They’ll never buy you a beer again, but every good plan has it’s drawbacks…

Yer pal,

Well email and plain old verbal communication are no different for me; I say stupid things through both means all the time.

But I do remember last year receiving a mass email from someone who got a REALLY stupid idea in his head. And for some reason he tried to defend it. Said things like, “I was so upset, I couldn’t go to sleep and HAD to send this email.”

It was ridiculous, really, and he’ll never live it down, but I don’t know what it was about him that made him defend the things he said. . . really silly. . . he lost a lot of really valuable friends that night. . .
