Using Hydrogen Peroxide to whiten teeth...

My dentist told me about this yesterday. Said it’s just as effective as Crest Whitestrips and etc. at about 3% of the cost. Just thought I’d pass it along.

I’ve never used the whitestrips, so I don’t have a dog in this fight. However, I’m not convinced. Crest whitestrips are between 6-10% peroxide gel, and you’re supposed to use them for 30 minutes at a time. Commercial hydrogen peroxide is around 3% solution. So, presumably to get the same effect, you have to gargle/hold the peroxide in your mouth for an hour to get the same effect as the strips. I would agree that rinsing with hydrogen peroxide every day would probably help with minor stains, but it probably won’t result in the “three shades difference” that the strip companies brag about.
oh - and have you ever tasted H2O2? stuff is gross.

edit: Sorry, just found a different website. Turns out Crest has put out a 5-minute a day product, with a peroxide percent <6%, which only promises 1 shade improvement. I would readily agree that a five minute swish with hydrogen peroxide is as good as this product.

Despite exagerating a bit, you’re pretty much right. Acording to my dentist, and what I’ve subsequently read on the interwebs, you need to swish with HP for 30-60 seconds daily on an ongoing basis to whiten and maintain. “3 shades” isn’t out of reach, though.
