Usually I can separate art from artist, but can't watch Roseanne.

Usually I can separate the art from the artist. Still love Seven, usual suspects and LA confidential. I know Kevin Spacey is awful person.

I just can’t allow myself to watch new Roseanne. I liked old one, not for her but for Goodman and Metcalf. But my wife tried to turn it on a couple days ago and I was surprised by my instant negative reaction.

Other examples of liking or disliking something that, in general, you should be ok with???

Am I being silly rejecting this show without even trying it first??

I didn’t think I was going to like it, but I do. I’ve seen the first two episodes, and there was a lot less pro-Trump stuff in it than I expected (basically none in the second episode). It’s pretty much the same old Roseanne crew, twenty years later. I can’t stand Trump, but I’m going to watch it.

She’s a fan of our weakling loser “president”? Then she’s dead to me.

I don’t know anything about her actual politics, but yes, her character on the show voted for trump.

I can’t hold what a character does against an actor who portrays them. I was never a big fan of roseanne in the day (I watched it occasionally because in the pre-DVD/streaming days, it was sometimes the only thing on), and have no great intention of watching the revival (anymore than I did of full house) but it could be interesting to see how a family works out those political differences.

My parents are trump supporters, and my way of dealing with that is that I have seen them 3 times since the election, briefly. Comedy can be healing and cathartic, and I’m not saying that rosanne is going to heal the divide in our country, but it is something that could at least start the conversation on how to start.

I don’t mind her character so much, as I can view it as an Archie Bunker kind of thing. We’re supposed to hate her views, and we do.

The fact that the actor herself holds reprehensible views does bother me. I’m honestly not sure what to do about it.

speaking of the Art vs The Artist, I have been noticing the art of Jim Carrey:

he is a man I find difficult to like as a human being but I can’t deny he is both incredibly talented as an artist and blowing my mind as a man who despises Donnie Two Scoops

Keep in mind that it’s not Roseanne running the show this time - it’s Sara Gilbert. And even the Trump-supporting Roseanne is surprisingly sympathetic to and supportive of Darlene’s gender-fluid son.

I think they’re doing a good job of portraying the subset of Trump voters who did it because they thought he’d shake up the government and make them more visible again–even the fact that it’s not working out as they hoped (see the initial scene in Episode 1 where Roseanne and Dan are carefully sharing their medications because their health insurance won’t pay for everything they need).

I don’t need everything to agree 100% with my opinions for me to enjoy it. I like to learn how the other half thinks, even if I don’t agree with them.

“Art?”

Not sure I’ll be able to do that this time, either. Especially not with the looney-tunes conspiracy stuff.

-Roseanne Barr on Twitter

Roseanne Barr IS a fan of our worthless “president.”

And a rightwing loony.

I didn’t think the “Roseanne” show was funny the first time around. She lost me completely when she deliberately butchered the National Anthem, and around the same time claimed to have “recovered memories” of her father molesting her as a child despite no evidence that he did so and her sisters disputing the story.

The show has potential with regards to issues pertaining to our current political climate. But I’m skeptical if it will ever see that potential for a couple of reasons:

1.) Non Trump supporters will have to get over their anger and actually watch the show with an open mind (lol. Not gonna happen).

2.) Rosanne the actor, is going to have to stop acting loony throughout the duration of the show’s run.

Eh, well, I said I didn’t’ really know her politics. I didn’t realize she was quite so… je ne se quoi.

  1. With trump tweeting his support, I think that his supporters may be happy to watch. I dunno, it may actually be good for them to watch non-trump supporters and how they interact with a trump supporter. If the show puts liberals in a better light that most trump supporters consider them, it may have a normalizing effect. They may find it is easier to accept a liberal, if they have someone that they watched on TV that they have a positive impression of to relate them to.

  2. If rosanne stays looney, it may give liberals a looney to relate to. <shrug>

I know a lot of Trump fans tuned in to watch the first episode in which Roseanne brag about voting for him. I have to wonder how many remained tuned in to watch the Conner family rally around Darlene’s gender non-conforming son and defend his decision to wear dresses to elementary school.

Roseanne’s chief defense of Trump boils down to one line: “He talked about JOBS! The way things were going, we were gonna lose this house!” But that line is conveniently swept under the rug and forgotten about when, later in the episode, Darlene confesses that she is moving back home because she…lost her job.

Also, after hearing that line, I am eagerly awaiting an episode from next year dealing with the Connors still losing their house because they can’t afford the massive spike in their property taxes.

That said, anyone who ever looked to, or respected Roseanne because of her political views doesn’t know her. She has a long history of poor impulse control and thundering her knee-jerk, poorly thought out opinions and then later doing a complete 180 turn on them. People seem to forget that she was a Hillary fan in 2008 and went on a public tear when Obama got the nomination, saying Hillary didn’t get nominated only because she was a woman. Months after Obama was elected, she decided she was wrong and that Obama was “the right guy for the job.”

I am not really surprised by the real Roseanne’s support of Trump. I am a little surprised that John Goodman, Laurie Metcalfe, Sara Gilbert, Sarah Chalke, and apparently even Sandra Bernhardt all went along with it and came back for the new series. (Lecy Goransen and Michael Fishman haven’t done much of anything since the original series folded. They may have needed the work – “Jobs!” – so they may get a pass.)

His talent is exemplified by his photo-realistic portrait of Huckabee-Sanders.

Go along with? Afaik, Gilbert was the driving force behind the reunion. And you’re actung like the show is a half hour Trump commercial every week. So far, not at all. It just, horror of horrors, includes a Trump voting character.

I didn’t know about Gilbert being the driving force behind this. That sounds weird to me, since doing so probably took her away from her regular gig producing and hosting a popular TV show.

And as far as the way I’m acing, no I’m not acting as if it’s a commercial for Trump[ every week. I am commenting on a specific element that is the topic of this thread. I’m also commenting on specific lines that were atcually uttered on the show. And don’t pretend that Roseanne (the character on the show) being a Trump supporter wasn’t something that was being used to drum up publicity for the revival. She didn’t “just happen to be a Trump supporter”, it was something everyone involved knew would get people get taling about the show. Eighteen million people didn’t tune to see the revival of a 30-year old show; it isn’t that much of a “beloved” old show. They tuned in for the debate over Trump.

It seems as though he called her to congratulate her on getting good ratings.

Yeah, they probably did. The X-Files revival netted 16 million for the first episode, and Fuller House drew an average of 14 million viewers from the 18-49 demographic alone, so Roseanne seems about on par with other 30-year-old revivals. Best I can tell, those are all regular viewers, not streamers, though that distinction can be fuzzy.

By contrast, Twin Peaks only got about 2 million viewers across all platforms for The Return.

??? - What has that to do with the topic of this thread?
