Usually I can separate art from artist, but can't watch Roseanne.

The Trump fiasco is no more “politics” then the election of a groundhog as POTUS would be. It’s not “oh, well, people have different political views than me.” It’s more “this is unimaginable and indefensible.”

Another thing I think about is that Rob Reiner said this weekend that Carroll was further to the left than he (Rob) was! So between Archie and Carroll being different and Carroll being a fine actor, it’s a very different situation between Roseanne and Roseanne.

I loved the show when it aired originally so much. It was very meaningful to me to see a yelling foul-mouthed family with kids my age doing things I did, wearing clothes like I did. We were not fancy Huxtables or Keatons. But I hated the last season about as much as I liked most of the others. It was so bad that by that measure alone I had no plans to watch the reboot. (And, to be fair, Will and Grace’s finale angered and annoyed me too much to watch its reboot too).

But there was a difference between “I don’t feel like putting myself through that wringer again” and “Oh boy she’s batshit and I don’t want to support someone like her through my viewership.” If I hadn’t been turned off by its finale, I wouldn’t have watched anyway because of Roseanne’s politics.

I avoid a lot of work by a lot of problematic people (many of whom mentioned in this thread) so it’s not that big of a deal.

It saddens me, however, because the Roseanne Connor that I loved would never ever ever have turned into a Trump supporter. She might have not loved Hillary, but she never would have gotten behind a man who was so vile to other women.

Well-made movies where an actor was later revealed to be a dirtbag vs. a current show that’s already of questionable quality? Not a tough choice. Not like Spacey’s going to see a dime if I replay a downloaded movie.

OP didn’t say the only reason was who she voted for. There’s that, plus the tweets, plus her overall history of crazy. So much to choose from!

The original show started ok but the bigger the real Roseanne got, the faster the show went downhill. It got to the point we couldn’t watch it, even with John Goodman and Sara Gilbert holding it up. Gave up a few seasons short of the finale, and there’s no reason to believe it would have any of the charm the first season had.

“Artist” who uses their celebrity status as a soapbox to promote harmful ideas, be it anti-vaccine nuttery, or homophobia, or racism, or whatever. I do not want to be part of that which builds their soapbox.

One who uses or has used their power obtained by their status to abuse others (inclusive but not limited to sexually)? Same. I do not want to part of why they have that power. (And not sure that Spacey doesn’t get some small royalty from some of those movies you might download. It adds up.)

One who is, as much as is possible given their status, private in their harmful beliefs? I’ll consume their art or not based on its merit.

But sometimes just knowing that an artist is in real life a despicable or even just very dislikable, person, even if they try to keep those views private to reasonable degrees, prevents me from viewing their work without considering who the person is. It takes me out of it.

Yup and now they’re pulling the ‘this generation of parents needs to beat their kids more’ trope. Disappointing. I remember in the original Roseanne series how Roseanne didn’t want to repeat the cycle of abuse on her kids because of her childhood. Now here we are. I hope I don’t end up like this when I’m old (becoming more and more mean, gullible and irrational). I’ve seen it in multiple people as they aged.

Not defending it or saying I do it all the time, or that the OP does, but clarifying: A previously downloaded version or a DVD purchased before we knew the star was so offensive. Spacey’s a bad example since he already had a reputation for being a prick even before the recent charges came out. Until recently, he was someone I could watch without his personal BS getting in the way. Roseanne has not been that way since about 1990.

I can’t think of a single entertainer for whom I *cannot *separate the artist from the work. To me, the work stands (or falls) on its own.

If Satan himself released what I consider to be a musical masterpiece, I’d add it to my playlist.

I guess I’m in the minority on this.
mmm

They do, if they know what these people are. But at least some of their movies came out before their predilections came out.

In a similar vein, seeing O.J. Simpson in the Naked Gun series.

I just rewatched a few episodes on amazon prime, including the last two episodes of season 9. At the end of the finale Roseanne was talking about how her and Dan tried to give their kids a life 50% better than their parents gave them. Which included not physically abusing them (I agree the connor kids tend to be shitty, and Harris is an ultra shitty kid). But it is disappointing. I know its a fictional show and all but still.

I always assumed aging was a one way road that led to more and more wisdom, maturity and competence. Each decade you could look back and say you were a better person than the decade before. But sadly that isn’t always the case.
