So yesterday (12/24) I stopped into my local Rite-Aid drug store to see if they had any good sales on Christmas decorations.
The seasonal aisle, until now filled with Christmas decorations and generic gift ideas, was half cleared out, and the other half was already filled with Valentine’s day stuff.
I guess they’re figuring the Christmas season was already a wash-out, so might as well start with the next one.
I was going to put this in the pit, but hey it’s Christmas and I’m not in a mood to rant. Besides, the whole thing is more silly than it is enraging.
Actually now that I think about it more, it would have been a great gag gift to get someone a heart-shaped box of candy for Christmas. Or to get a big one and bring it as your hors d’oeuvre item in the pot-luck Christmas dinner.
Why is it awful? It’s a seasonal aisle and Valentine’s day is the next season. Are they supposed to leave a gaping hole in the shelf just because the Xmas stuff is half sold-out?
That’s nothing. The first time I saw Xmas decorations this year was in late August.
A friend of mine who’s rather fond of making deals went around to all the drug stores, etc. right after Xmas and offered the managers something like $40 for all the post-season Xmas lights they still had in stock. Sometimes it took some convincing, but they almost always gave in. He ended up buying something like $10,000 worth of Xmas lights for $500 (it might not have been quite that dramatic, but it was close). I’ve never seen that many lights on one house before.
I hate to break this to you, but whether you buy it in December or February it’s been in the store itself since early to mid-December, and probably in some candy company warehouse about 6 months before that. It’s well older than 2 months (at Valentine’s day) regardless of when it’s put out on the floor.
Just count your blessings…Valentine’s Day is pretty much just cards and candy. Can you imagine if there was Valentine music, Valentine home decor, etc? I mean, it’s not as bad as Xmas (although Halloween is getting nearly as bad, eh?)
Oh - I should clarify to say the staff was removing the Christmas stuff to make room for the Valentine’s day stuff.
I’m kinda surprised that they are intentionally missing out on all the post-Christmas sales, which are becoming fairly popular. I can’t imagine that they’re doing more sales of Valentines day stuff than they would of the after-Christmas stuff.
Regardless, the image they’re giving is :wally through and through.
