How many people post something without at least some intention or curiosity about how others will react? I was fairly harsh on Valteron in his “Santa” thread, but things become clearer after reading his post here. I can see how, as a gay man, he correctly perceives the oppression, homophobia and bigotry that accompanies most organized religions, and is lashing out at them on these boards. I have no use for churches or religions either, and have serious issues with the intolerance exhibited in their names. However, I have stopped short of declaring myself an atheist. I don’t equate a supreme being with what I see being done in his name, and can hold those two things separate in my mind. Perhaps Valteron could take a cue from that and find some peace.
There is a difference between lashing out at organized religions for the positions they take, and assuming that all persons adhering to that religion trod the party line. There is also a difference between lashing out at organized religions for their positions, and straight out lying about what those positions are.
You don’t like Islam as a religion? That’s fine, but to assert that there are “few” Christians in Egypt is nonsense, and to assert that all Moslem Egyptians would be delighted to murder Santa Claus is beyond nonsense. The comments made in the “Christmas is a fraud” thread are also false statements, oversimplification, and hate speech.
I don’t like the position that the Republican party takes on gay rights, but that doesn’t mean that I condemn every Republican, nor that I condemn every other Republican platform, and it certainly doesn’t mean that I make up lies about how the Republican Party was heavily financed by the Communists back in the 1950s as a front for trying to destroy democracy.
Only if peace was the joy of his desiring. Frankly, I rather doubt it.
Preaching to the choir, my man. I lived in Egypt for several months and I lived in Mali for two years, which is overwhelmingly Muslim, and a more peaceful people you will probably not see. I agree that his Santa thread was bigotry, thinly cloaked in satire, and that he paints with a mighty broad brush.
