Vatta's War by Elizabeth Moon

So, I’m reading the third book in this series, Engaging the Enemy, and I was wondering if anyone else has been reading these books too? The first two books in the series are Trading in Danger and Marque and Reprisal.

Given
the size of the Ansible communications satellites, her getting a downloadable software ansible in her head at the end of v2 was just a bit unlikely!

In terms of plot progression, I assume it was in order for her to retain an edge over larger forces attacking her and enable to continue to have a reason for winning, other than just luck, but it ruined the end of the book for me.
Having said that, I’ve read a few pages of v3 and may well continue!

I’ve read the first two, and will probably read the third one at some point. I wasn’t aware that it had been published already. It took me a while to get over the fact that the first one was an entirely new world from her previous books that I liked (Heris Serrano and Esmay Suiza). I totally respected her inventing new characters and a new world to play with, I just had a hard time deciding whether I liked the new ones–and I’m still not sure I like them as well as the old ones.

I hoped I’d like the second one better, but it seemed like there was something in the plot that I didn’t like (and the events described in the spoiler above were a little too obviously setting up for the next book).

But, sooner or later, I’ll probably read the third one, just not right now.

The UK paperback’s been out for a week or two; the US hardback was due out around now as well…

Well, for what it’s worth, that annoying thing from the second book hasn’t actually turned up again in the third book, except in a couple of spoken references between Ky and Rafe towards the end of the book. What I’m finding rather interesting is the goings-on on Slotter Key in the third book (Aunt Gracie is a hoot), also Kylara’s plans for a privateer fleet beginning to come together towards the end of the third book, though with serious leadership problems..
