I decided to start a new thread and see if that attracted anyone’s attention. There was a thread related to this back in June/July, which I have linked here:
After about July 13, postings on SDMB/MPSIMS and LJ abruptly disappeared, and I was wondering if the VegasDope which had been planned for the weekend of Oct. 10-13 has been cancelled or postponed, or whether it’s still going on as planned. Has anyone made any definite plans to get to Vegas this weekend?
I plan to come down Oct. 11 and leave on the 12th, if there will be some sort of event to come to. Some possibilities discussed were:
Dinner at Buca di Beppo’s Saturday, the 11th.
Hanging out at Terrible’s after that.
I heard from Diane in my LJ VegasDope posting, and she’s going to see what she can find out. I’ll still be up for going if we can rouse up enough interest.
I’m bumping this thread up once more in the hopes that people who was around when the first one was posted (see above) might still be interested. I discovered while scrolling through MPSIMS that the Burlington VT fest may be the same weekend, so perhaps that’s attracting more interest from the eastern dopers.
I’m making one last attempt to bump this thread and see if I get any renewed interest in VegasDope. After that, I’ll assume it’s dead. Perhaps we can look at doing it another time. January and February are better times because these months are typically the slowest of the year (the only time Vegas sees lousy weather!), so you find more cheap airfares, hotels, etc.
Anyone who might be interested in a VegasDope get together sometime other than the one originally posted can post here as well.
JustPlainBryan and I were part of the original cast of characters planning on going, but the situation has changed, and we really can’t afford to go this time.
I really am honestly hurt to have to say that, because we just had such a great time last year.
Gee, sorry you can’t make it, Java. Several of the original characters have also dropped out due to financial or other reasons, and I’m wondering who’s still in.
Well, I live here, so I am in.
But that said, I do have visitors from Germany during that time so my participation will be somewhat limited.
January or February probably wouldn’t be bad - granted the weather is generally not condusive to swimming in the hotel pool, but the rates could be lower and people could cash that Christmas check from Aunt Peal and fly out. (MLK weekend or President’s day weekend?)
Again - considering I live here, I really have no vote regarding date. How about getting a feel when the out-of-towners would like to come?
If you do decide to move the date, the trick is to make absolutely 100% certain there is no huge convention during the same time - that causes flight fares and room prices to skyrocket!
DMark, do you know of a website that lists when Las Vegas area conventions are? Or, is it best to contact hotels or reservation agents to get an idea what times are really cheap to come down? I’ve gotten some cheap rooms around the times you’ve mentioned.
Cool, well, we’ve got Sanscour, DMark, and me We might have Diane as well, and RJKUgly.
Any more Las Vegas locals, or people within driving distance think they might want to go? Certainly people from L.A., San Diego, Phoenix, and Salt Lake might be able to give it some thought
RJKUgly now tells me he can’t make it on the above date. Yeah, I’m starting to think moving it to sometime in November might be good (as long as it’s not Thanksgiving weekend).
That should give you an idea. If you see a convention with thousands and thousands of attendees, that is probably not a good time to come. Of course, three-day holidays can be just as crowded and overpriced - depends on how early you book.
Then again, I have heard of people calling in for reservations on busy weekends at the very last minute and getting great deals.
In typical Vegas style, booking a cheap flight and toom is a crap shoot.
