Ventrilo Tech Help

A friend and I have downloaded and installed Ventrilo and got it to work successfully when hosted on his machine, but not when hosted on mine.

Basically, the program requires someone to run both server and client version, and then other people can access it using just the client version. When he’s set up as the server we can connect just fine, but the problem is that his computer seems to take issue with running Ventrilo and City of Heroes simultaneously.

Voice communication while gaming is important to us, since he’s on CoH and I’m on EQ2 and we want to still be able to have a good natter.

Anyway, since my machine is bigger’n’faster and all that gunk (though he’s the one with the spiffy ginormous internet connection) we were trying to set it up to run the server from my machine. Technical info follows:

  1. I have ADSL connectivity at 512/128.
  2. The connection setup goes as follows: Phone line connects to 4-port ADSL modem, modem connects via ethernet to my computer and my husband’s. We do not own a router; this is the entirety of the network setup.
  3. Part of my subscription to my ISP includes a fixed IP number which I have confirmed with them as correct.

I have tried disabling the firewall (Norton Internet Security) to confirm that it wasn’t blocking connections to Ventrilo. I hadn’t figured it was, since it gives a message if it detects anything it thinks is wonky, but I tried anyway to at least eliminate one possible problem. I don’t use any supplementary firewall stuff like ZoneAlarm Pro - just Norton’s.

Has anyone here used Ventrilo successfully? Any obvous tech solutions that I’ve managed to overlook? The fact that we can get it working in one direction but not another leads me to think there’s some kind of strange interference going on with my computer, but if it’s not the firewall…what could it be?

He is running Windows 2000 and I’m running XP (Home). I’ve ensured I’m not running it in Compatability Mode (listed as an XP problem in the FAQ).

I haven’t changed the default port and wonder if I should…and more importantly, if that’s the problem I’ve not the faintest idea how to go about fixing it.

Any ideas from technically minded Dopers?
