Guild episode! And it looks like Dr. Girlfriend is changing her MO. The Monarch seems to have clearly lost it. Wonder what’s going to happen with the two henchmen, especially now that a whore’s stolen the one guy’s Stanza.
Not sure what was going on through a lot of that episode, but really does it matter? Still funny as hell.
Damn, there was so much going on in that episode it’s hard to believe it was only 22 minutes of stuff. Henchman, Monarch and the whore, Orpheus, Venture and his Walking Eye and the boys and Triana.
And it all worked so well.
I don’t know about you guys, but the scene with the Monarch and the tattoo was really creepy. Where’s that side of him when he’s out doing supervillainy?
Deeper. Deeper. Deeper!
I was hoping Dr. Girlfriend was going to have Trianna’s friend as a sidekick.
It was a parody of Red Dragon, the Silence of the Lambs prequel. The serial killer in that movie (and presumably the novel as well) had a similar giant disconcerting tattoo covering his back, although it was a red dragon in that case. And did you notice how the ink started to run when the Monarch took a shower? He wasn’t hardcore enough to get a real tattoo!
So many good lines in this episode. My all-time favorite that I shall remember and keep: “It smells like a Bible story in here!”
I couldn’t understand that one.
Is it just weird? Or is there an explicable joke being made in that line?
-FrL-
I laughed pretty hard at that line too. I assume it was meant to imply that it smelled like large-scale brimstone and carnage, like in a Bible story about God smiting someone. The ten plagues, the destruction of Sodom, the other destruction of Jericho – all those events probably smelled really bad.
The “birds and bees talk” montage was pretty funny too.
It’s good to see that the polar bear from Lost is still getting work.
I said the same thing while I was watching. Dr. Girlfriend seems to be having a real crisis of confidence out there. She doesn’t know who she wants to be or who she wants to be with. I hope she pulls herself together.
That episode cracked me up. Monarch was pretty ripped, I guess he worked out in prison. Things that had me in stitches-
-The Alchemist sounded like the same voice as Shake from ATHF. Also, I’m not sure if he’s definitely gay ‘had a phase for a while but went back’
-The ‘Cool Hand Luke’ reference when Dr. Venture was trying to seduce the villans with his mechanical spider.
-The Blacula that wouldnt die; Orpheus zapped him like 5 times during that conversation.
-The Triad was a pretty awesome team; they came off as a bunch of bickering over-the-hill mystic heroes but really showed their stuff vs that wizard.
Did anyone notice a connection between this ep and the Trial of the Monarch? In the trial scene, Dr. O gets ‘hypnotyzed’ into thinking the Guild will give him a villain- “I hope its a girl villain!” then we see The Au Pair auditioning- I was pretty sure she was gonna get it. “Do you smoke cigarettes or just eat them?” Look forward to seeing her teaming up with Trianna’s friend.
Wikipedia feels different, but did anyone else get a strong Samuel L. Jackson-as-Jules Winfield vibe from Jefferson, the vampire hunter? I kinda wish they’d got the guy who plays Gin Rummy on The Boondocks to voice him.
By the way…was “The Alchemist” supposed to be a pastiche of anyone? Dr. O’s archnemesis looked like DC’s “Deadman,” and the vampire hunter seemed like Blade, if played by Blacula (the original Blacula, I mean. Not the guys he was hunting.).
And what IS the politically correct term for a blackula?
I had to watch it twice before I realized that the folks standing in line were auditioning to be their Guild-approved villain. Somehow, I thought they were trying to join Dr. Orpheus’s team. I couldn’t quite get my mind around why the Order of the Triad would be looking for a fourth member.
What was that wizard’s name? “Kritht?” “Frith?” Against the Triad, he looked kind of pathetic. I guess the Guild will take anybody, as long as the check for their initiation fee clears…
The Alchemist is Master Shake!! I love it that that guy is getting work!
Dr. Orpheus has a secret identity? Oooohhh, tell us more!
Africulan-Deadagain.
I finally got around to watching this one. I loved the Walking Eye (a direct Johnny Quest reference!) and Dr. Orpheus always needs more screen time. I was disappointed that Dr. Girlfriend went back to her Lady Au Pair identity. I hope she doesn’t go crawling back to The Monarch. If it were me, the season finale would be Dr. Girlfriend reclaiming her identity, going completely rouge and hatching a huge nefarious plan to take over the League of Calamitous Intent. She has already shown hostility toward that organization, and you can keep herding evil villians forever. Then the League comes to Dr. Venture (or, more specifically, Brock) to ask for help in defeating Dr. Girlfriend.
The Monarch’s scenes with the whore were suuuuuper creepy.
I dunno. Can Dr. Girlfriend go completely rouge, what with her prediliction toward wearing pink Christian Dior knock-offs? Seems to me that wouldn’t be a really good look for her.
Of course, if she stays with the Lady Au Pair persona with the basic black, she might be able to get away with it.
I didn’t think Dr. Girlfriend was wearing too much rouge, which is makeup worn on the cheeks, named after the French word meaning “red.” However, she could go rogue.
