Verizon "Incredible." Any reason not to get this model?

This requires that iTunes cough up and export its music files.

If you’ve imported previously-existing music files into iTunes, there was an option for “copying files into the iTunes Library”. If you did this, iTunes now has its own copy of the files in the iTunes Library folder, and your originals are still where they were. If not, iTunes is just keeping track of the originals.

Now, if you bought music through iTunes, the purchased files are stored in iTunes’ own folder.

Are you on Mac or Windows? On Mac, the iTunes folder is in <User>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/ sorted by band name, then album name, in folders. On Windows, the files are in slightly-different locartions depending on which version. Link.

Presumably the Incredible’s sync software can be pointed to both the iTunes folders and any other music folders you may have, for import.

They recently improved Google Voice Search and it’s unbelievably accurate. I don’t think I’ve yet given it a phrase that it hasn’t gotten exactly right. Very handy when you’re in the car and want to set up a navigation destination without crashing into a tree.

Swype took a little bit of getting used to, but then a switch flipped and now I literally can’t imagine typing by tapping all the keys. In fact, I’m annoyed when I try to type something that isn’t in the dictionary because I invariably swype it first and of course it can’t recognize a word it doesn’t know.

You definitely can and should disable this. It’s in the settings somewhere. Let me know if you can’t find it and I’ll be more specific.

One thing that might be good to consider (I’m sure someone here knows offhand), is which of the two phones is likely to get “sunsetted” in terms of Android version. I know my original Moto Droid is unlikely to get much beyond 2.2, but I don’t know if there’s a difference between the X and the Incredible. I believe the Incredible is the older phone by 6 months or so.

I think HTC is slightly better with providing Android OS updates than Motorola, but both are probably the two that are the best, not counting the “flagship/dev” phones (HTC N1 and Samsung Nexus S.)

Samsung, the Nexus S notwithstanding, is the worst with Android updates. Despite 2.2 (Froyo) being out since the spring, and Gingerbread (2.3) being out for a month or so, NONE of it’s Galaxy S line have officially gotten the 2.2 update in the US (that’s 4 models of phone, one for each major carrier.) And the international versions have gotten the 2.2 update, but it f-ed over a lot of phones, so they pulled it. They are completely silent on the issue, I guess hoping if they put their fingers in their ears and go “la la la can’t hear you Froyo what?” then the problem will go away. Many users (myself included) have upgraded ourselves by rooting and flashing either a leaked or custom 2.2 ROM.

Bu if we’re going by which one is newer, then yes, the Droid X is more likely to keep getting updates than the Incredible.

Assuming that we’re talking about the same thing (that you now have to give your Droid X either a PIN or a screen swipe pattern which you have to enter after it’s been asleep for fifteen minutes or less), that automatic screen lock was a “feature” that Verizon/Motorola threw into the 2.2 upgrade on the Droid X. When you try to disable it via the Settings / Location and Security / Change Screen Lock, the “None” option now says “disabled by remote phone administrator”.

The HTC Incredible (at least so far) has not been given this “feature”, which is the one thing that now makes me jealous of my wife’s HTC Incredible.

And Giraffe, if you’ve found out how to defeat that “feature”, please let me know, because I hate it.

I’ve been looking for a way to disable swipe to unlock my Droid X since this afternoon, and haven’t found a way to do it; it’s the one annoying feature on this phone as far as I’m concerned…well besides the horrible battery life, that is.

I don’t know if it’s related or not, but the iPhone was the first all screen device to have a swipe to unlock…it was also the first phone I’ve ever used that didn’t butt-dial or get screwed up just sitting in my pocket (that wasn’t a flip phone, and even then my RAZR changed volume in my pocket).

The swipe to unlock feature is there to make your phone do nothing while floating around in your pocket.

We’re not talking about the swipe-to-unlock feature. That’s just fine, and both the Droid X and the Incredible have it.

But with the Droid X after the 2.2 upgrade you have to either enter a PIN or a pattern-swipe after you’ve done the unlock swipe. It’s a security feature to ensure that you’re you.

(The pattern-swipe is a unique pattern that you set up - say, a “Z” or an “X” - that you have to duplicate before you can use your phone.)

((And we should point out that if your phone is ringing you can still answer it without the PIN/pattern-swipe - but you still have to enter one of the two after the call ends.))

Gotcha. I pinlock my phone because I’ve had it stolen before, but I can see how that would be a PITA.

Huh, bizarre. I disabled my swipe-lock when I got my phone and haven’t seen it since. However, that was version 2.1 and I’ve since upgraded to 2.2 and there doesn’t seem to be a menu option to do this any more. I also see the options for the pattern/PIN lock under Location & Security / Set Up Screen Lock, but the None option is not disabled.

Google does seem to show a free app called No Lock that 2.2 users have used to disabled the screen lock, so you might try downloading that from the Market.

Yep. Others recommended the same thing you have, so it seems users are not aware that this option is no longer available.

I don’t like No Lock because it simply replaces a swipe with a click. I was looking for something to eliminate the necessity to perform another step after clicking on the power button, and I found it. It is called AntiLock. I downloaded, installed, and configured it, and now, after my phone goes to sleep, all I have to do is press the power button and I’m back on my home screen. No more swipe to unlock. Woo-hoo!

AntiLock is free, but I would have paid for it.

Nope, I’m talking about the swipe to unlock feature, and now, thank goodness, it is disabled. You can’t see me now, but I’m crying tears of joy.

The Droid X does nothing when it is in your pocket when the screen goes into sleep mode and the only way to bring it out of sleep is to press the Power button, which takes a good amount of pressure on the top of the phone, so I think it is unlikely that the phone will become active by accident.

Ah yes, that sounds like what you want – that’s what my phone does.

Which has the best screen? I was pretty convinced I wanted the Droid X until I saw it in the store. The screen was dim fuzzy, while the Fascinate screen was gorgeous! The Droid X screen was like looking through plexiglass, while the Fascinate screen was like crystal. I think the Incredible screen is also pretty nice. I guess I’m just wondering if the Droid X I saw in the store had its settings set so that it would look that way?

I don’t think the Incredible is the phone for me because of the battery life. I have an HTC Eris now and must charge it every 24 to 48 hours. But if someone tells me the Droid X has a gorgeous screen as well, I think that will be my next phone. It’s a toss-up between the X and the Fascinate.

I love my Droid X. No, no, I am in love with my Droid X. I have to admit, however, that the HTC Incredible has a brighter screen, and the icons are noticeably crisper.

The Droid X has an LCD screen, and IIRC the Samsung phones have AMOLED screens. My Incredible is an earlier model that has an AMOLED screen, and in general the colors on the AMOLED screens are more “vibrant” and have more “pop,” but a lot of people think they look oversaturated and phony in some cases. Also, the OLED screens use the “PenTile” pixel grid, which if you look at it closely has red and blue fringing on some things that have sharp color transitions.

But why are you in love with it? What’s the “umph!” that it has over the others?

Are you saying that the newer Incredible doesn’t have an AMOLED screen?

To update–

My son got the Droid X tonight and I got a Droid 2 Global. Reason–Last month was the “buy a Droid, get one free.” This month is "buy a Global 2, get something equal or less. The Droid 2 has a smaller screen, but I think that’s about it. We’re both happy. And, neither of us has a swipe-lock.

Thankfully I have a 17 year old daughter who has an older droid and can show me how to work this thing.

It has an AMOLED screen. The superior Galaxy S/Fascinate has a Super AMOLED screen, which performs way better in the Sun, uses less power, and it overall brighter. The Galaxy S screen is second only to the iPhone 4.

Android phones are the future, man. I love my Droid
