For my work, I need to find references to an automobile called the Verona. I do not know the make of the car, but I believe it’s from an American company. I also gather it was from the 50’s. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. My numerous Google searches have turned up nothing but opportunities to rent cars in Italy.
Thanks, in advance, for the kindly assistance of the Doper classic auto community.
Well, there is such a thing as a Ford Mondeo Verona, of recent European make. It seems as if that model name goes back to at least 1989.
Since Ford has a habit of recycling names, I think it’s possible that the term “Verona” might have been used on a much older design. Unfortunately I cannot confirm that.
Oops. I hit the post button a little too soon. In the 1950s and 1960s, American carmakers had a habit of lifting names from famous European racetracks or race cars. Hence the Corvair Monza, the Pontiac Lemans. Note that while some of those track-names are still used on models today, they seem to be pale shadows of their former selves.
Verona was one of the towns through which the gruelling [url=http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/miglia.htm]Mille Miglia[/ur] ran. Therefore it seems possible to me that Ford might have used the name for a sporty car of some sort, though I’ve never heard of it, and then gone on to trash the name by tacking it to some forgettable geezer like the one I linked in my previous post.
