So is Veronica trying to get Weevil tossed back in jail? And is the Widow O’Dell trying to throw suspicion on herself? Otherwise why keep Keith hanging around on some phony pretext and give him time to look for clues?
I had a hard time connecting the dots in this week’s mystery. Too many shady characters.
I’m not too thrilled about both the mystery of the week and the story arc mystery. MOTW was weak because as soon as she talked to Bonnie’s roommate, I thought to myself “Yep, that’s the culprit, right there” and the story arc has remained dry and has not provoked my interest at all.
However, in term of character development, this was an excellent episode. Veronica still has many things to learn, and I am glad that she can let go of her anger. She still has lots to learn, but she’s giving it a good start. Logan’s rant to her voicemail was annoying, but true. I’m also surprised she still has such high expectations of him. When Dick learned about him and Madison, all he could do was scoff. His attitude when he confronted Logan was just a mere “Dude, that’s not cool, but it’s you, what can I expect?” If Logan and Veronica get back together (AGAIN!), I really hope they stop with the relationship drama. crossing fingers
Those remember-this clips at the beginning of the show are useful, but they can be spoilers sometimes. We knew exactly who was breaking into the Widow O’Dell’s house because they’d gone to the trouble of showing that clip of her ex-husband.
I love the scenes with Dick and Veronica. Reminds me a little of the good old days when Veronica and Logan used to trade insults.
I was confused about how Veronica IDed the roomie. As I understood it, V saw the book “What to Expect…” which had in it a “Right to Life” bookmark - apparently from the group that was photographing women leaving the clinic.
The pregnant girl had said her boyfriend had given her the book (sorry I don’t know all the characters’ names).
The bookmark made V decide that the boyfriend had slipped the pregnant girl the RU486.
When it turned out the roomie had given the book (and bookmark), suspicion turned to her.
Now - leaving aside the possibility that V had no reason to believe the bookmark was given along with the book, I don’t get why the “Right to Life” bookmark would signal the person who intentionally caused the miscarriage.
Does the bookmark supposedly show that the boyfriend/roomie was a member of/sympathetic to the Right to Life group? If so, then wouldn’t they be the LAST person to induce miscarriage?
And where did the roomie get the drug? There was no picture of her leaving the clinic.
I hope I’m explaining my confusion sufficiently. Just didn’t make sense to me, how V solved it.
It wasn’t Bonnie (the pregnant girl) who said that Tim (the boyfriend) had given her the book. It was Phyllis (roommate) who said that. So when Veronica (the detective) saw the bookmark she concluded that the person she believed had given Bonnie the book also gave her the drugs. She was right in that conclusion but had been given the wrong person as the book-giver.
Veronica’s hatred of Madison is based on at least a partially wrong premise. Veronica said that Madison roofied her, but she didn’t. Someone else (I wanna say Dick) slipped the drugs in Madison’s drink but since it wasn’t diet Madison didn’t drink it. madison spit in it and passed it to Veronica but Madison had no way of knowing the drink was dosed. Sure, be angry at her for writing SLUT on your car but being mad at her for the drugging isn’t fair.
I’m pleasantly surprised (much like I was for “Drinking the Kool-Aid”) that the “obviously” abusive and crazy religious guy ('cause what else could a TV preacher be but a hypocrite, liar and cheat?) was in fact the most kind, supportive, loving person with actual wise advice.
This show did something very, very difficult to do, IMHO: present an abortion episode without a clear cut agenda or political stance.
Dinsdale, Otto, my problem with the book/drug provider connection was that it all rests on the assumption that the bookmark came with the book. I don’t know about you, but I have lots of bookmarks that move from one book to another. The book itself was a pregnancy book, an odd choice for someone who wants her to end the pregnancy. Then again, it’s a much maligned book these days because it’s so detailed about possible pregnancy complications, so perhaps Phyllis thought Bonnie would be scared by stories of vaginal embolisms and decide to abort on her own!
She gave her the book when she was going to give the baby up for adoption. It was when she decided that she was going to keep it that the RU-486 came out.
Okay. I had forgotten that Phyllis told V about the book.
But still, why would it make sense that the giver of the book - including a pro-life bookmark, would also have given the drug to terminate a pregnancy? Wouldn’t you consider the bookmark and the RU486 pretty - uh - contradictory messages?
I mean, it wouldn’t make sense for me to give someone PETA literature, and then slip some bacon bits into their salad…
BTW, does “Rufie” mean giving someone “date rape drug”?
You know, as vile as Madison is, she did NOT roofie Veronica. Dick roofied Madison, and Madison (not knowing this) handed Veronica her drink.
There are more than enough reasons to hate Madison without holding her responsible for that. Especially when while Dick is not on Veronica’s list of favorite people, she *doesn’t * seem to hold *him * responsible for what happened to her, or even to find the idea of his slipping *Madison * a roofie unforgivable, or, for that matter, especially objectionable.
Aaaaand, on preview, what **Otto ** said, but I still needed to get that out.
The bookmark was sent to whomever obtained the RU486. So then that person has the drug and the bookmark. The bookmark wasn’t necessarily given in the book, it’s just that the bookmark was available to the giver or the reader of the book–so it was in the dorm room somehow. V assumed it was given with the book when she thought it was the boyfriend’s gift. That wouldn’t have had to have been true even if the boyfriend had given the book. But once it turns out to be the roommate’s gift, the bookmark could have gotten there either by the roommate putting it there, or by the roommate leaving it in the room and the pregnant girl picking it up and using it. I’d say the latter is more likely, since the boyfriend might use the gift of a book to cover his “pro-abortion” tracks, but the roommate probably gave the book, then learned that her friend was going to “ruin” her life, and then went and got the drug.
The plot hole is that to get the drug she would have to have a positive pregnancy test at the clinic.
No, no, you bring up a point I hadn’t thought about which was the question of VM’s attitude toward Dick. I’m not sure if we know that VM knows that it was Dick who roofied the drink since I found “A Visit to the Dentist” to be confusing when I watched it and haven’t viewed the DVD for a while. If she doesn’t know then a reveal might be interesting. If she does know, some explanation of her laid-back attitude toward him would be interesting. The TWoP recapper has been pointing out all season that VM’s relationship with Dick is oddly portrayed and I tend to agree.
Is that an assumption or are you basing that on knowledge of how RU-486 is dispensed? A possible fanwank is that being Bonnie’s roommate, Phyllis might, um, have some level of access to Bonnie’s urine to fake a home EPT. No idea how a clinic tests for pregnancy so who knows if she could fool the clinic or not.
They should have done an ultrasound to determine how far along the embryo/fetus was. RU486 is only used up to a certain point in a pregnancy, though I can’t tell you exactly how far.
The woman at the clinic in the episode seemed to say “we would never ever give RU-486 to a man, but a woman might possibly be able to palm it or keept it under her tongue”, without mentioning anything about proof or pregnancy.
I enjoyed the episode quite a bit. My roommate picked up on the real culprit immediately, but I admit that I did not.
I was sure that Tim was going to catch Veronica sneaking around, as in the past he has been almost as good at detective stuff as Veronica herself.
I loved the hissy fit.
Even if I buy your explanation js, it seems like pretty weak stuff for V to base an open accusation on. As you note, V knew from the clinic that Tim - being male - could not get RU486. And even if he got the drug from the clinic, there is no reason to believe the RtL group would photo and target him. So he would never have been sent the bookmark. Unless he was a member of the RtL group.
And if Phyllis had somehow gotten the RU486 from the clinic, shouldn’t there have been a photo of her in the binder?
I figured the one who slipped Bonnie the RU-486 would turn out to be her mom, who never even appeared in the episode. It seemed to obvious to have it be the dad. I never thought about the roommate, though clearly I should have. It’s always the person who is the most “helpful” to the investigation.
I think I know who killed Dean O’Dell: the older son. We know he’s taken the car out before because he was the one who dented the fender and then vandalized the car to cover it up. His dad was thinking of sending him off to a discipline camp, so there’s motive. And if I’m right, I’m sure we’ll hear more about motive later on.
I think it’d be pretty weak if Cyrus’s son turns out to be his killer. As of the murder episode, he was basically a non-entity; I can’t even remember seeing him before last night’s episode. It would be too cheesy to make the murderer someone who was not a known quantity at the time of death.
Mindy’s definitely up to something. Not necessarily the murder (or covering it up), but she’s fishy. (But she’s hot, so she’ll probably get away with it.)
I always love scenes where Keith and Veronica shake down somebody as a team. Like last night’s visit by the “Drew” family. Too bad “Hester” got recognized.
The mystery of this week was not very interesting, in my opinion. The ‘bookmark tells all’ solution really didn’t add up. Shrug. So be it.
I can’t imagine Tim did not somehow catch Roni mining his computer. He probably has his office bugged/monitored somehow. I do think it makes sense that Tim was not the guilty party on Bonnie’s miscarriage. I get the sense that, in the producers’ eyes, Tim is a not-particularly likable character, but ultimately a good guy who’s on the right side. That makes him a more interesting foil for Veronica.
I continue to be impressed by Jason Dohring’s acting. All his interactions in Logan’s to-do with Veronica over Madison were spot on. That boy never misses a beat.
Time for my eternal grumble about the lack of cast regulars. At least half the credited actors were missing from this episode. Oh well. At least Weevil was in the house.
A question I’ve been pondering since Weevil and Veronica’s interaction last night. When Veronica asked Weevil to steal Madison’s car and crush it into a cube, Weevil said he would do it, and said something like “That’ll be five hundred dollars, that’s the going rate isn’t it?” and the look on Veronica’s face was half shock and half “you rascal”. I understand that it’s what Veronica charges when she’s solving a mystery for a non-friend, but what exactly is the relationship between Weevil and Veronica? Was Weevil really expecting money, or just a little joke he was playing on her? Veronica helped him (and Logan) out last year by figuring out who was dealing with the Fitzpatricks and I don’t recall her asking him for money to help solve that case. It seemed odd that Veronica would hand him money at the end for his troubles when they have a mutual backscratching thing going on that goes beyond cash in hand.
No, $500 is her stated friends (and friends of friends) rate. But I noticed VM’s look of surprise and also wonder what it means. She couldn’t have seriously thought Weevil would steal a car and risk going back to prison simply because they’re such buds, without compensation.
