Veronica Mars 2.1: "Normal Is the Watchword"

At least I’m pretty sure that’s what the TiVo said the episode was called.

I can’t be the only one watching this show. Come on, what did you think? Now we know who was at the door, and it was more complicated that I thought it would be. Not sure why I expected simplicity; there wasn’t much last season either.

Now we know what the season’s big mystery is. Foul play is surely afoot, but who would have done that? Surely Logan hasn’t gone THAT far over to the dark side.

Let me just say that someday after I’ve had a baby, I hope I look as good as Charisma Carpenter. Wow.

And for crying out loud, killing off a whole bus load of kids?
Next week’s teaser suggest the bus driver was suicidal
And as far as the biker that Logan is accused of killing? Obviously he was framed. And the reason he was framed is because Veronica was in love with him - if only briefly

and, yeah, I’ve never had a baby - I’d STILL like to look as good as Charisma
Nice to see her working - I thought after she left Angel to spend time with the baby, that was going to be it for a long time
So all the ex-Whedon kids except Sarah are working steadily again (only saw part of The Grudge - SMG is going to have to work real hard to escape Buffy)

I wanted to mention, if anyone missed the show or was watching Lost or what not, it may re-air in your market this weekend. Of course, it occured to me that people who didn’t watch might well avoid the episode thread, but if any wander in… Some UPN affiliates will be rebroadcasting the week’s episode during the weekend. I know my local station was doing that this summer for the repeats, but has apparently stopped for the regular season. But, from another board that has a lot of VM activity, people posted that quite a few UPN stations are keeping it up. It’s a local decision, of course, so, as they say, check your local listings.

Anyways, as to the episode? I loved it. Very cool.

Yeah, so we know who was at the door, but it looks like it maybe wasn’t who Veronica wanted to be at the door.

Some things I liked:

[ul]
[li]Keith’s interaction with Veronica and Wallace (especially the line about “pinching your nipples” and the look on his face when Veronica tells him what Wallace is doing in the bathroom)[/li][li]Dick’s ridiculous attempts to stay on Veronica’s good side (very cute and funny, and I think there was a The Big Lebowski reference in there)[/li][li]How hot Charisma Carpenter looked[/li][li]The ending, which I did not see coming. Poor Meg.[/li][li]Gia gets up to say a few words before the class, and all she talks about is how she’s dressed. Heh. Pretty shallow[/li][/ul]

Oh, and so there was a black girl in the credits too now, but she didn’t show up this week. I’m guessing she’ll appear next week.

I think my favorite line from last night was (and I have to paraphrase here) “Yeah but Dad, I swear, you’ll really like these guys!”

Runner-up is probably “Mrs. Casablancas, can Dick and Beaver come out to play?”

I disagree - if you followed the convoluted chronology, she was still with Logan at that point
it wasn’t until later in the summer, when he was not “getting over” it, that she brooker up with him, and even later that she got back with (why am I drawing a blank on his name?) the other guy.

made even better when you saw what happened next

I liked Keith’s description of his “understanding” with Wallace’s mom

The episode was almost too complicated for me to follow. If I were a first-time viewer, I don’t think I’d watch again. But I’m not, so I will.

It was nice to have the ghost of Lilly show up. I hope we see more of her; she’s much hotter than Charisma.

Either Gia’s father or the black baseball player is guilty of something. Mark my words.

an evil mayor? it’s been done
(ok - he’s only a candidate, but still)

I disagree with your disagreement.

The “who’s at the door moment” happened before she was with anybody. She opened the door, saw the silhouette of the person standing on the porch, and said, “I was hoping it would be you.” Then he turned around and she said, surprised, “Logan?” and took him inside. THEN they got back together until she broke it off because he wasn’t getting past his phase. It seemed clear to me that when she opened the door she initially thought it was Duncan standing there.

Looks like last night’s episode did comparatively well in the ratings. It came in 5th, beating a rerun of *One Tree Hill * on WB, but Zap2it.com says it got “some of its highest ratings” with a 2.1/3.

Of course *Lost * beat everyone, but for those of us who TiVo both shows this is good news. I hope the *VM * DVDs sell really well and give UPN extra incentive to keep the show on the air because while I enjoy *Lost * and am always excited to watch it, I **love ** Veronica Mars.

I only got into it over the summer; I was doing my usual UPN Sunday afternoon thing
Angel/Stargate SG-1/Voyager - and suddenly there was a different show where Enterprise reruns used to be -
VM nicely fills the void left by the end of BtVS

I disagree with your assessment as well.

Remember she had broken up with Logan because she suspected that he drugged her and either raped her, or his drugging her resulted in her rape. But the events of the finale showed her that Logan did not drug her and that she was not raped. Which means she could forgive Logan and resume playing kissy-face with him. Plus, she probably wanted to tell him about his dad before he found out on the news or something. She was hoping it was him at the door because she wanted to start again. She sounded surpised when he turned around because he just got the shit beat out of him.

well, actually, she did leave him hanging in the pool house when she discovered the videocams, and she began to suspect Logan of killing Lilly - so, all 3 of us are correct :D:D:D

Huh. That’s entirely possible. I don’t think we can say for certain which of the two she was hoping for then.

Do lots of people turn 18 before their senior year? I was 17 when I graduated, but I skipped a grade. Doesn’t that mean they didn’t start kindergaten until they were 6? I thought 5 was the standard age to start school, so most people turn 18 during their senior year. It’s trivial, I know, but that made me wonder if they just wanted all their potentially sex-having characters to be legal. Also, Logan is “practically an orphan” so if he was a minor, he might have to have a guardian of some sort.

most school districts have a cutoff date: born before it, and you’re the youngest in the class, born after and you could be the oldest
where i grew up it was Dec 1st - I was born in september so i turned 17 during my senior year, but a lot of kids turned 18 during
in Neptune, it’s a plot device

Actually, it depends. I know my husband (born in September and went to school in CA) graduated when he was 17. I was also born in September, but I didn’t go to school in CA, and I turned 18 the day I started my Senior year. It also depends on the cut-off date…I missed mine by 1 day so was held back an entire year.

So I guess it depends…but generally, I’ve noticed in CA that many students celebrate their 18th birthdays their first year of college.

I liked it. The rythm of the storytelling was a bit off, maybe because they decided they had to recap all of the previous season (which is stupid, this one is only followed by the fans). But Veronica is back on the job and while this is not timeless, fantastic tv, it certainly is a pleasant way to spend 42 minutes, which is more than I can say about 90 per cent of all television aired.

Had I been 15 years younger (hell, I could manage it with 10) I’d be in love with Ms Bell (She’s 25, I’m 44).

you can still have a major crush on her

heck, i’m a straight female and I have one

Well, yeah.
Problem is, I get father feelings (and I’m not a father).
But her looks is very attractive, and based on interviews, she’s one smart cookie, which is always attractive.
I’m so glad I rule over my hormones and not vice versa. One of the benefits of middle age.

I know several people who were just catching onto the show during summer reruns, so they probably weren’t stupid to do the recapping, especially since the Season 1 DVDs aren’t out yet. You’re right though; the rhythm was a little choppier than normal. I was amused that there was a flashback within a flashback during the teaser (Logan’s flashback to the bridge fight during Veronica’s flashback to the night everything happened).

I think now that most of the summer’s main events have been covered and the new mystery is off and running, they’ll be able to get back into the groove.
