I was a first time viewer and I didn’t care for it but I am willing to give it another shot because the exposition obviously screwed with the plot a bit and so many of my friends (and Joss Whedon) really like it.
Yeah, there’s a lot to catch up on. Give it a few more episodes to grow on you.
Sorry, guess I wasn’t clear… that’s what I intend to do. The episode was obviously thrown out of whack by the exposition and it takes time for a show to hook me anyway.
DS9, BtVS, and Firefly – my all-time favorite TV shows – all took at least half a dozen episodes to hook me so I’m willing to give this one the same opportunity assuming I can remember it week to week as I watch almost no television while not at work.
I was kinda a first-time viewer and I thought it was confusing. I’d just seen the first episode of the 1st Season (so good, I’m hooked), so I was trying to get auntie em interested, too. Unfortunately, a bit confusing… especially with the way some of the characters were presented in the very first episode.
But I’ll catch up and it’ll make more sense to me.
You are not alone. Last season, I really liked the episode where Veronica sang the song, which included the lyrics, “I’m goin’ ta gitcha, gitcha, gitcha.” I don’t know the title. Her rendition made me hope for a litte more from her appearance on the Emmy’s.
The same episode included Veronica intruding on the ‘Nepture Society’ or whatever it was called and her running off with the whole crew in pursuit.
Pokey
That’s Blondie’s “One Way or Another”. This past spring, Kristen Bell also starred in Showtime’s film of the musical Reefer Madness. She was great in it, and the movie overall was a lot of fun. She really can sing, and I’m glad she got a chance to on VM.
For what it is worth, I am a first time viewer, and I was totally hooked. If this was an example of a not-so-great episode, I am excited to see what is in store.
I’m watching it. (well, recording it whilst watching Lost and then watching it)
Who was on the bus (besides redshirts)? Is Meg the only recurring char?
So two big mistieries: The bus crash and who stabbed the guy Logan was framed for (Frankie?)
Brian
now they have to find ANOTHER school paper advisor…
Yep. Meg, the teacher, and unidentified students. The other identifiable characters that had been on the bus were Dick, Beaver, Duncan, and Gia (who’s not a recurring character yet, but it certainly seems like she will be), all of whom took the limo, and Veronica.
Felix. And yeah, it looks like those are the two mysteries for this season. Though something else could be introducted still, I suppose. The issue of Veronica’s parentage wasn’t mentioned until the sixth or seventh episode last season.
Back to the “whose at the door” thing, I agree it’s ambigious. She opens the door, sees a figure with his back turned, and kind of in the dark, and says her “I was hoping it was you” line. Then Logan turns around and moves more into the light and she says “Logan?” in a suprised voice. But what was it that suprised her? That it was Logan or the condition that he was in? I don’t know, it’s hard to say, but I have a feeling we’re not going to get a definitive answer.
Are you sure Dick and Beaver were on the bus? didn’t they ride in Gia’s limo? I know we didn’t see them at the crash site, but still
Sorry, I meant they had been on the bus originally. But yeah, coming back from the stadium they were in the limo.
whose stepmom is Charisma? Dick’s or Beaver? (or are they brothers?)
The (stuff)'s gonna hit the fan when whichever of them catches Logan with her
which is going to alienate Logan even more - he’ll go postal before the season’s out
You guys caught that Logan’s a suspect in the bus crash mystery as well, right?
Right before Veronica and Duncan got on the bus, Logan stopped them and had a chat. As he left, he said, “I’m going to miss you.” I remember commenting at the time that it sounded like a threat.
I’m a little torn. I didn’t love that episode because it covered a lot of twists and turns in flashbacks and voiceovers, which is weak. The drug-testing plotline was also not really up-to-snuff.
On the other hand, all that stuff is out of the way now, so the next episodes should be really good.
They’re brothers. Dick is a senior, and Beaver’s a junior.
Can someone please spoil the last fifteen minutes for me, from when Duncan and VM kissed in the coffee shop? I blew off friends because my UPN affiliate was re-running this ep (adding to an already way too complex schedule of viewing and taping for tonight) and my dumbass local affiliate fucked up and started some stupid Enterprise repeat 15 minutes early.
Great detail please.
ok - they all get on the school bus for the field trip except Logan (who says somethiing ominus to VM & Duncan “I’ll miss you” and then looks slyly at them as they walk away. Beaver & Dick oare on this trip
Logan rings a doorbell and Charisma comes to the door “Can Dick and Beaver come out to play?” He follows her in, she drops her robe, and he says “we’ve got to stop meeting like this”. Road trip to baseball stadium serves no other purpose than to introduce new student Gia - who is a major ditz IMHO. Duncan tells Veronica some of them are riding home in a limo becuase the bus is skenky. At first she says yeah, but when she sees Meg turn the offer down, she opts for the bus to try to patch things up (Megis major pissed at V now because she’s convinced V stole Duncan, which isn’t the case. She didn’t take up with duncan until weeks after she broke up with logan, and apparently duncan ditched Meg before junior year ended). The bus makes a pit stop at a gas station/convenience store. Veronica is destracted from reboarding by what she thinks is Lilly’s ghost (expandable storyline hidden there) and rounds the corner of the building to find Weevil. While they’re talking the teacher/chaparone asks if everyone’s on the bus. V’s former friend looks out the window, sees V and W talking and says “all here”. Veronica and Weevil watch the bus pull out, then Weevil leaves. V pulls out the cellphone and starts to call Wallace for a ride, but Weevel comes back and offers her a ride.
On the way home they notice an accident scene. The limo kids (Beaver, Dick, Gia, Duncan and maybe one or two others) are looking over a cliff at the remians of the bus, that apparently skidded round the trecherous curve, busted thru the concrete retaining wall and crashed on the rocks and into the water. Gia keeps crying “they’re all dead. they’re all dead” Duncan embraces Veronica with great relief. Camera pans over the edge of the cliff and we see bits of bus debris but no floating bodies. Next epiosde’s teaser implies the driver left a suicide note, and has the driver’s daughter asking V for help because her father was not suicidal
Also in watching the rerun - I now see that it is entirely possible Veronica thought the person who rang her doorbell was Duncan, because the shadowy figure whose back was to her was slouched a little, and not until he stood upright (before turning around) did she say “Logan?” with a little surprise in her voice. It was during that visit she “got back” with Logan Now, earlier in the last episode, (or maybe the one before) she bailed on Logan when she found the videocams, AND she had also revealed to Duncan that they did not share blood. So it is entirely possible, after dreaming she was relaxing on a lake with Lilly, she wanted it to be Duncan. Well, it’s moot now; she’s with Duncan and Logan is banging his best friends’ stepmom
I’ll just add that the field trip introduces two other characters I think we’ll see again. Gia’s father, Woody Goodman (played by Steve Guttenberg of all people), who owns the baseball team (“the Sharks”), and a former star player of his, Terrence Cook (Jeffrey Sams), who is now retired. Woody gives a little speach about how he’s running for mayor of Neptune and so he thought it would be a good idea for his daughter to go to high school there. Then she stands up and says a little bit, exclusively about her clothes (which is ditzy, but kinda funny). Dick also kinda hits on her.
Oh, and the reason Veronica broke up with Logan is because she felt he was encouraging this whole fued thing with Weevil and the PCHers. Particulary the vandalism to the community pool that’s mentioned earlier. She just wanted to let things die down and return to normal, but Logan is fanning the flames or what not. He doesn’t take the breakup well, yells a bit and smashes one of her lamps against the wall, and then Keith kicks him out. Meanwhile, Duncan has apparently been visiting the coffee shop like every day since the flashback that showed him first showing up there, and on Veronica’s 18th birthday (which is apparently sometime in August and weeks after she and Logan broke up) they get together.
not that it’s crucial to the plot, but i’d have loved to have seen what was on the fortune.
