Veronica Mars Movie!

Just finished it, I had to buy it online 'cos it wasn’t showing at any theaters near me. I could have rented it, but this way I can watch it later again. I loved it. I didn’t see the series when they were on, but I watched it with Amazon a few months ago.

I loved the movie. A very well-spent $50 on Kickstarter I must say. The theater was less than 1/2 full, but it seemed like everyone got the jokes and caught the cameos.

I think the movie does stand on it’s own, but you have to pay attention at the beginning – which could be difficult for casual viewers who haven’t put their phones away or finished conversations with their seatmates. (Which was not an issue at all during the screening.)

I’d donate again if they want support to make a sequel.

I will happily kick in to any future VMars projects.

I went with my mom, and she really enjoyed it – she said it was one of the best movies she’d seen lately. She was not a total VMars virgin, but she was not “up” on the show, and at one point she confused Piz and Duncan???

[mild spoiler]

She did not recognize Celeste Kane

So that is a data-point.

I just saw it with my girls and we all enjoyed it. It was certainly written to keep the fans happy and that’s ok. Everything happened as it should have.

Got a bit of a laugh before the movie even started. It was a very small theatre and I knew it was sold out so when we found someone in ur seats I had no choice but to be that person and ask them to move. It was confusing as they were sitting in the right seats according to their tickets. Then I heard one of them whisper “17” and they both scuttled out in a big hurry. Their tickets were for tomorrow night. Snort. I hope it wasn’t a first date!

I loved it. I do wonder how much of that was due to there being new VM at all, rather than the movie itself, but I think it was mostly due to the movie. Like I wonder if I rewatch it in a year, will I love it still? I think so.

And yeah, Logan was bad news in a lot of ways at Neptune (Pirates Ahoy!) High and Hearst, but he obviously changed since then. Getting into a bar fight is not the height of maturity, but Piz and Wallace jumped in too. I’m not going to hold what he did as a kid against him as an adult. He was abused and neglected and looks like he turned himself around. Same with Weevil (maybe minus the abuse and neglect.) Madison can go fuck herself though.

I liked the call backs and the continuity. I like how there was resolution, but also left a lot of openings for sequels or future projects.

Umm, Logan hasn’t changed at all. His apologists all fail to note all the footage of him with his pop-star gf is current Logan - the same shouting, throwing things, bullying, and fighting we saw in high school and college. Logan started throwing punches because that’s how he deals with things - Wallace, Piz and Weevil joined in to help Veronica’s friend.

Logan is a damaged, spoiled, violent thug. Same as a non-drinking alcoholic is still an alcoholic, Logan is who he is despite the periods he’s on the wagon and he reverts to that at the merest* hint* of stress or difficulty. And what I hate is that Veronica should know this better than most, as a PI and the child of a alcoholic.

Considering that the $6,000,000 was more or less free money from Kickstarter (minus meeting the various pledge rewards) they’re probably already in profit.

We went yesterday, and took some friends. One of them had never seen the TV shows, and he said that he was able to follow the basic plot along just fine, and thought it was good. He could tell when he was missing some callback or nuance, but it didn’t distract him.

Your theater has assigned seats? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that - weird!

I’m going to let myself believe that Logan has straightened up a lot with the discipline that comes from being in the military. He can’t be totally ‘fixed’ though. It’s his passion for Veronica that makes there love so great. What was that line that was in the move, and also the series?
Logan: I thought our story was epic, you know? You and me.
Veronica: Epic how?
Logan: Spanning years, and continents. Lives ruined and blood shed. Epic!
Veronica: Come on. Ruined lives? Bloodshed? You really think a relationship should be that hard?
Logan: No one writes songs about the ones that come easy.

Welcome to the new and improved movie going process. I’m seeing it more and more, and I like it.

I can understand not liking him or not thinking he’s good enough for Veronica, thinking his behavior goes too far. I think she was right to break up with him in S3. But I think it’s not black and white to say he’s not changed at all. That’s not to say he couldn’t revert to chaotic Logan, but I think his fighting with his very unstable girlfriend wasn’t that out of line. I didn’t see really anything that was “danger danger red flag!” other than the bar fight, and that I don’t really mind too much because it was clearly meant to do nothing but embarrass Veronica and it pissed off the others to the point of fighting too.

I’m not a Logan apologist. I don’t know that I would want to date him, but I saw growth in those ten years.

Am I the only one who hated all the drippy whiny relationship stuff and watched the show for the mystery solving?

Yup.

I think it added to the show when it wasn’t the sole focus. A huge running theme was exploring how Veronica fit in (or was ostracized) depending on who she was helping at the time, and relationships are part of that.

It finally dawned on me: this movie is really just a lost episode from Sliders.

Apparently, but what’s the point? If I wanted drippy whiny relationship stuff amongst angsty teens, I could watch 90210 or One Tree Hill or Hollyoaks or an endless array of other similar programs. The main attraction of Veronica Mars was that the main character was smart in a reasonably realistic way - not a school-sitcom-genius, but also not the vapid idiot that most of the people in this sort of show usually are. Except when it comes to drippy whiny relationship stuff, where she’s as dumb as the rest of them.

Hey, if anyone’s interested in a “official kickstarter backer” t-shirt, I have an extra (size “large” but more like a medium). I’d be happy to send it to a fellow marshmallow.

Because, as JSexton said, the relationships were the context within which the investigations took place.

Homer: Which one’s wearing green?
Bart: Logan.
Homer: Logan’s a jerk.
Bart: Yeah.

Just PM’d you.

Sure it’s not a Lost episode involving sliders?
