A mass ascension is currently underway at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Conditions are perfect this morning; over 500 balloons are here this year. Mass ascensions will take place every morning through next Sunday (weather permitting).
Well, that’s pretty much it for today. Most of the balloons are back on the ground. Tune in tomorrow morning when it all happens again! Weather permitting, of course.
I can’t find any definite answer right now; here is the Balloon Fiesta website. Click on the Gas Balloons tab for more info. They are saying the America’s Challenge launch is scheduled for around 6:15 pm Mountain time (about an hour from now).
The KOAT link in the OP appears to have a live webcam at Balloon Fiesta Park so that may show the launch.
Edit: I believe those are the gas balloons visible on the KOAT webcam.
Sorry to hear that. I drove over and watched it from a vantage point a couple of miles from the park. When I left the KRQE cam was showing a wide-angle view of the park and the gas balloons were visible. When I got back they were showing the same view.
I don’t like you anymore!
I wish I was close enough to go over. At least I got to play with both helium & hot air on Saturday (separate events, both somewhat locally)
Like the rest of Fiesta, you can get (fairly) close to the inflation/launch of these balloons, I suggest watching up close next year.
4/5 are going for their second night.
You know, I might have to do that next year. My biggest complaint about the Fiesta is dealing with the crowds, but since the gas balloon launch isn’t usually done when the park is most crowded, it could work out. Plus I could take the shuttle and not have to deal with traffic. Okay, it’s settled- next year I’m going back inside the park!
Edit: And I didn’t know one of the teams had landed until I saw your post. Last I checked all five teams were still in the air.
Two balloons just landed in our parking lot here at work. They don’t usually come this way (NW of the park) but when the wind is right we see them go over. First time they ever landed here, though. Pretty cool!
Sullivan/White landed, then Bryant/Cayton stayed up just long enough to get a few miles further to move second place. It looks like Fricke/Cuneo are going to be the only team over 1000 miles & to maybe see sunrise over Canada!
No updates in almost 2 hours and they were coming in pretty often, even in the middle of the night. I’m going to guess that they landed in a remote area of Pukaskwa National Park and haven’t been found yet.
