Video games based on movies that don't suck?

Is this title an oxymoron?
I think not quite, because I rented The Godfather game for PS2 a while back and thought it was decent (decent meaning rent-worthy, but not purchase-worthy).

But my understanding is that games based on movies are usually steaming piles of crap mainly because of developers pushing to release the game quickly, while the movie is still hot and in the theaters. So of course this may be part of the reason for The Godfather being O.K., considering the movie was released in 1972.

But hell, might as well ask - are there any other games based on movies which are at least semi-fun and playable (i.e. “rent-worthy”) non-steaming piles of crap?

…the exception to this rule is the absolutely fantastic Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64. One of the greatest games of all time…

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay.

Although only loosely based on the movie, this game is exceptionally high-quality. It was made by Starbreeze Studios, a Swedish developer that really knew what they were doing. Excellent graphics, a good mix of RPG and action elements, and outstanding voice acting (Ron Perlman, Cole Hauser and Xzibit are featured as well as Diesel, who provides a great gravelly voice for the title character.) The environments are extremely gritty and interesting to look at, and dozens of hidden sub-quests in the game give you the opportunity to unlock lots of cool concept art.

One of the most evocative, enjoyable, and stylistically unique video games out there. Personally it would be my pick for best Xbox game period.

There is a game called Chronicles of Riddick - Escape From Butchers Bay that is set pre Pitch Black. It is a great game. High quality graphics and cut scenes. I would highly recommend it not only for the game-play itself, but also for expanding on the Riddick character.

In this game, one of the main parts of the story fairly early on is Riddick getting ‘his eyes’.

I second Goldeneye and third Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay.

Both are fantastic games. Hmm, I wonder if a game based on a movie can only be good if it’s an FPS

The Warriors video game is pretty freaking good.

A pair of old games and only for the DOS-era PC but X-Wing and Tie Fighter definitely did not suck.

Behold…

TRON

The game made more money than the movie in my recollection.

I thought Mission Impossible for the N64 had it’s moments.

So did Top Gun for the NES.

I’m not sure if Star Wars games count or not…some aren’t based on the movies-proper, and not all are good. (Though they taught me that about a dozen different people stole the plans for the Death Star, if memory serves.)

I liked the Star Wars Pod Racer game, but had to upgrade my computer twice in order to finish the thing.

The Die Hard Trilogy for the original Playstation was actually quite fun, if admittedly shallow. (But that sums up the movies too, so it’s all good.)

A couple of Star Wars games - the 1st Knights of the Old Republic and Lego Star Wars are good.

Lego Starwars I was better than the prequel films. The Xmen Legends adventure games are pretty good as well.

This one is a bit of a stretch, but the Kingdom Hearts games totally rock. They are loosely based on a wide range of Disney movies in that a lot of the subplots revolve around the movie storylines, though the main storylines are unique to the games.

I have to disagree with that one. It felt like the Disney World segments were just glorified commercials for the movies. I know the plots of those movies, I’ve seen them all at least once growing up (and then again when my brother went through the same phase). I wish they could have extrapolated on the plots and given us something different.

And dammit, it needed more Squeenix references. A sprite statue somewhere, a gummie ship shaped like the Epoch, a family of Dragon Quest style slimes…

The old Ghostbusters game for the C64 was awesome. Kind of repetitive, but awesome.

To each their own.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

It’s a great adventure game. My brother and I played it before seeing the movie, then enjoyed watching the movie and lining things up with the game.

Just thought I’d mention that based on the comments in this thread, I started playing though **Chronicles of Riddick **, I’m not really sure how this one slipped past me the first time around since I tend to play most every game that comes out.

I’m not very far in, but I’m finding it to be quick a surprisingly excellent game. For one thing, it’s got about the coolest game menu you could imagine (mechanical cube). Even more amazing, the game looks great and plays great on my machine.

Just thought I’d put in another mention to try this game if you haven’t already.

It did. So did the GoldenEye game.
