Due to a poor headache/reward ratio, we’ve discontinued the VigLink marketing service with immediate effect, a phase I’ve wanted to use since hearing it on The Crown the other day.
Thank you. FWIW, it didn’t play nice with my VPN, even after I had opted out at VigLink. (Clicked links wouldn’t link.)
And there was much rejoicing.
As a member, I don’t see any ads, but what does this mean for the dis-membered?
Dunno, but a few months ago it was playing silly buggers with my ability to follow links, despite my being a paid member. Instead of just clicking on a link to get a new tab to open (because it opened all right, right where I started from), I had to right-click and select open link in new tab from the pop-up. That was fixed, but I’m still glad to see the back of the company.
Good.
I didn’t see any Viglink-inserted links in posts, but every once in a while when I opened a normal link in a post, it would take me to a blank page with the URL of the SD page I was clicking from in the title bar, and doing a “view source” would find the URL of the page that I was trying to visit.
Huh.
I’m on a Mac and use Safari, and I’ve never noticed that behavior. Must’ve only acted up in certain environments.
Is it just me, or does the board seem to load a lot faster now that viglink is gone?
I even started a thread about it once (which is how I knew Viglink was causing it.)
I notice it clicking on links. Much faster, and I don’t get that waiting for viglink message when following a link.
Thank You Ed.
I will now congratulate you on a wise and evidence-based decision. I will not now gloat, insist “I told you so”, or dance on the grave of that contract. Much.
In celebration, I will insert a URL into my message and witness it not being converted, against my will, into a live link.
"Ce-le-brate good times, COME ON!"ETA: Wait, it got live-linked anyway. Not by Viglink, but by the editor.
That’s most puzzling, and unwelcome. I think I need to mess around with the settings, because I don’t want software assuming I mean something when I explicitly don’t.
Still a win, because not Viglink, but not quite perfect yet.
Click “go advanced”, uncheck “Automatically parse links in test.”
Thanks. I knew I saw that option someplace. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be one of the options you can set a default for in the User CP, because if I want a linkable URL, I’m perfectly capable of clicking on the “make link” button in the editor.
I despise software that makes stupid assumptions about my intentions, especially assuming I’m stupid. (Like, “He obviously forgot to put URL tags around that. We’ll fix it for the poor dear.”)
Stupid vBulletin. But at least no Viglink.
What I found most insidious was when Viglink would change links completely. Like, if someone put in a link to some product at Amazon, Viglink would change it to a link to that same product at Wal-Mart.
When it was working properly, Viglink was supposed to never produce any observable effects for the end user. Except it was never working properly.
