Well as I understand it, the issue was getting in and out of the game. I think the mayor was pushing to postpone the game.
76 and 95 are normally bad before and after the game, with the snowfall getting worse starting around 6PM, they would have been a complete clusterfuck. And now SEPTA has shut down, the prospect of a few thousand drunken fans stranded in Center City beating each other senseless at the train station was probably not something the city wanted.
It does seem a little wussy. As they said on Sportscenter, “Girl scouts in Green Bay sell cookies in this kind of weather.”
In fairness, the weather dudes are going fucking nuts over here. (Southwestern CT.) The local weather guy actually said that going outside could be fatal, and to avoid doing so even to walk the dog. (The stated reason being you can get disoriented in the near-total whiteout conditions.) Personally I think both the NFL and the weathermen are a bunch of whining pussies. The only thing I think of in weather like this is how much I wish I could be skiing in it.
It was coming down at a rate of 2-3 inches per hour, for anyone wondering. As a guy who grew up just outside Chicago, I’ve always felt the northeast was a bunch of whiny crybabies when it came to snow. Out here they delay and/or cancel school at least a dozen times a year for snow. I don’t remember Chicago schools ever being closed.
(I posted this in the weekly thread before I saw this one.)
there is a mass delusion that i mentioned up thead that philly is a tropical town. some of the stuff they use for pavements in this town is mind boggling. it rains and snows but hey! polished marble is just perfect for a large courtyard/pavement. crazy!
snow and storms coming in from the west/north west tend to die or weaken going over the alleghenies. the lehigh tunnel goes through that weather killing range. the weather on one side of the tunnel is sometimes very, very different from the other.
philly is on the nice side of the mountains. if a storm comes from that direction, only a dusting to an inch or two will happen in the city.
nor’east’rs are the only thing that brings heavy snow to philly. even then, there is a buffer called new jersey that protects the city from getting dumped on. the storm has to really hug the coast for the city to get hit with a lot of snow, rather like the one yestaurday.
if the storm had moved off shore a few miles philly would have had about 10" less snow, still would have had people running around like the sky is falling, but the game would have gone on.
It was more along the lines of ‘tempting fate’ because he had a career-best season last year and a serious injury. The guy isn’t a spring chicken AND he was the leader of the traditional rival team.
We had just as much snow as they’re getting in Philly the same day we had to play that game against the Giants. I’m not talking about the really big storm that caved in the Metrodome, but another six inches or so we got the day of the game, that caused all kinds of delays and jam ups with people getting to the game. Why does Philly get special treatment? We don’t even call off school for a storm like this.
Philadelphia got 12.4" not 6". And apparently high snow fall totals are somewhat rare in Philadelphia because of reason cited earlier in the thread and the Twin Cities may be better equipped than Philly is for high snow fall totals.
How did Philadelphia get special treatment? to the team? to the fans? to the city?
to the Team? Philadelphia is fighting for the Home team advantage in the playoffs and now they only have 4 days to prepare for Dallas next week. (which is probably four more days than they need since it is Dallas [/snark]).
Yeah, the delay really favors Minnesota. They’re coming of a short week with an injured QB who might get better, and they’re basically playing for last place now, so having a short week after this doesn’t affect them nearly as much as the Eagles.
ESPN reports that Favre hasn’t passed a concussion test and that the Vikings don’t plan to test him between now and the game. If so, he’s definitely not playing. Webb has taken all the snaps with the first team. The delay does mean Adrian Peterson could be able to play.
dilworth plaza had polished marble in the courtyard where you would pick up the el or subway by the waterfall thing. many people fell, they switched it out for terrazzo, not much better. they also have terrazzo under the municipal bldg where it connects to surburban station. very, very slick and very, very icky, i wouldn’t want to fall there.
quite a few of the big office bldg courtyards have polished granite or marble mixed with rough.
You’re drunk. Philly gets a MASSIVE advantage because they don’t have to play in any weather. Not only did they delay it one day, they delayed it two so that there’s a near zero chance that snow or wind will upset the Philly offensive attack. A blizzard game would have leveled the playing field considerably.
Peterson still has a shot at the rushing title, which (aside from the bragging rights) also means a lot of incentive money, so I’m not surprised he wants to play.
All the talk about which side benefits most by the postponement is silly. The game was rightly postponed for public safety reasons, to keep people and property from getting hurt or damaged while going through dangerous driving conditions to a football game. Everything else is beside the point.
