In 1996 I started a little page called “Virtual Bubblewrap” as part of my homepage. A friend and I had been trying to come up with the stupidest idea we could for a page… something that just would NOT translate to the medium.
It got hugely popular while my back was turned. I had forgotten it existed for well over two years, and when I installed an access log parser I not only noticed it was there, but noticed that it was getting a LOT more traffic than anything else on my site! So I started paying more attention to it. Over the years I developed new versions… the first version was an extremely clumsy set of frames where each bubble was a frame and it reloaded a “popped” bubble when you clicked it. Next came the javascript version.
Finally earlier this year I registered a domain for it and my baby moved away from home and became its own site. I also broke down and made a very clumsy Flash version of the bubblewrap. It sucked ass, but worked a lot better than the previous incarnations.
Well today… (actually yesterday if you go by the actual date) my friend Thwack and I finally did it. We worked together (ok he did most of it) and came up with a really GOOD Flash solution.
And so…
…after only 7 years waiting…
…I give you…
VIRTUAL BUBBLEWRAP AS IT WAS MEANT TO BE!!!
Virtual Bubblewrap has been publicly endorsed by Pamela Anderson. Several years ago I did start work on a prototype “all boobies” version of it but aborted it because I thought she might take it the wrong way.
