A discussion amongst friends popped up this little tidbit. A friend of mine claims that Visine was created and marketed to potheads specifically, and that the tag line “Gets the red out fast” alluded to the red eyes you get when you get stoned.
My bullshit detector is going off. Anyone else heard this?
Im fairly certain Visine wasn’t created and marketed for marijuana smokers, but many marijuana smokers do actually use it to clear the redness out of their eyes.
I don’t know if it’s specifically marketed to stoners, but I don’t see any reason why it would have to be. They’re going to use the stuff no matter what the commercial says.
I used to work with a bunch of numbskull potheads that actually made fun of people who didn’t carry visine around with them. Strange lot, those po-theads.
Potheads are in all likelihood a stubstancial percentage of their market, and I imagine they are most aware of this. That being said, allergy suffers are probably a greater percentage.
Visine was first available OTC in 1960, at a time when I would venture to say that American users of cannabis sativa hardly constituted a “substantial market share”. “Reefer madness”, remember?
