Has anyone stopped to envision America governed by one solely partisan political party? What would be the quality of life if the Democrats won the Presidency and gained a 2/3 majority in the Congress and the Senate? What if it were the Republicans? Many of the truly partisan, I think, would tend to view an unchallenged rule by their party as a Paradise. I would like to see these visions of a Partisan Paradise in America. I know there are true believers on both sides out there.
I’m much more skeptical. I think total control by one party would push this country towards a totalitarian regime. The Democrats would create a country similar the U.S.S.R. and Republicans might create a country like Nazi Germany. So I suppose if you can’t envision a Paradise for your party, you could imagine the Hell on Earth the opposing party would create.
Interesting question, but you are unclear as to how this dominance of one party was arrived at. Did the majority of Americans genuinely want this party to dominate? Or did they get there by third-world means? This has a bearing on your doomsday scenario.
My personal feelings are that I am more committed to ideas than to any party. For this reason, I am frequently opposed to the idea that the parties should modify their positions in order to attract a more votes (within reason). At the present time I find that one party (the GOP) is far closer to my way of thinking on most issues, so I support it. It is possible that the burning issues of the times may change to the point that I’d be more in agreement with the Democrats. Also, if the GOP achieved total dominance, it is concievable that elements that are currently held in check due to political realities would gain prominence, and that I would find these disagreeable.
But as it stands now, these scenarios are far far away, so I cheer any gains made by the GOP.
I should add that, in the world of ideas, people count for alot more than parties. If the Republican party was suddenly abolished by law, all the Repoublicans would migrate into the Democratic Party, pushing it to the right. Eventually, the right and left wings of the new Democratic Party would be the de facto Republican and Democratic parties, even if they were officially united.
