"Visiting Respects"- The Chicago Accident.

I have yet again just heard a reporter at the scene of the Chicago Deck Tragedy use this phrase. They’re ALL using it. I’m completely befuddled but I realize, this may be a Chicagoism. Help me?

They keep saying,

Don’t you pay condolences and show respect? I’m not being a wise-ass here, nor trying to make light of the awful event.

I’m just really blown away by what these people are saying. Is this a Chicagoism? Does one, when attending a Wake over on S. Racine, say to one’s spouse, " I’m going to go visit my respects to Joey Baggadonuts today, care to join me? " ??

Born and raised Chicagoan here. Never heard that phrase. Weird and clumsy sounding, if you ask me.

Just as Gundy said, I’ve lived here most of my life and have never heard it. One newscritter probably made a boo-boo and the rest picked up on it.

I’ve never heard it either in my 14 years here and previous 24 in Iowa. I agree with peri.
