Visual Trivia Quandry- The hardest Scavenger Hunt I know.

Hello to all fellow Straight Dope Readers!

I have begun my Trivia Quest for 2007 yet again - and as everyone here has been so helpful in previous years I once again ask for your collective knowledge and help with identifying the Visual Portions of the Trivia.

They are posted at my site:

http://photos.yahoo.com/jknewstrom

or at:

http://www.lundgraphix.com/trivia.html

This is an open call as this is a contest posted only for fun and without any serious prizes. KVSC Radio in St. Cloud MN has done this for years and encourages large teams.

If you have any idea please post them here or email me directly at jnewstrom02@hotmail.com.

I hope to hear all of your brilliant ideas soon.

~John Newstrom

#8 is from Frank Sinatra’s mugshot, when he stood accused of the heinous crimes of Seduction and Adultery. The full picture is here.

#9 is a young Clyde Tombaugh, I’m pretty sure.

#1 looks like Richard Branson, but the picture quality is too poor to tell for sure.

#3 is from “Sinkin in the bathtub” 1930. Bosco and Honey.

#2 is a royal portrait of Prince Philip, done in 2004 by Stuart Pearson Wright. The Prince hated it. Link 1, Link 2.

#22 has Joni Mitchell on the left, but I don’t know who else

As mentioned #1 is definitely Richard Branson, by the look of the get-up and the company I would say it was another company/product/service launch. Maybe the wings means it’s a Virgin Atlantic launch?

#4 is a drawing by a prolific sci-fi artist from around the 70’s. I don’t know his name or where that particular picture is from but I recognise the artistic style from any number of sci-fi novels and other boosk from the late 70’s & 80’s.

#21 definitely looks he’s dressed in a scouts uniform, and if it helps I reckon that is a set of bagpipes on the rail behind him.

#15 is pretty obviously part of a map of an antique-engine museum with some agricultural exhibits or a farm museum with considerable engine exhibits. One candidate is the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in California. If it’s not them, they may know the competition well enough to hazard a guess to where it is.

#7 looks like Prince William.

Bingo. Here’s #22 in colour, complete with extensive caption.

As to #15, if you go to you will find that the Albany Pioneer Show has a Corliss engine and a rope making machine. Not only that, but another person doing the same trivia competition has already got an answer to the same effect by posting on [url=http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?p=188343]this message board.

If you’re not careful, this thread itself will end up giving all the answers to the whole trivia contest to all your competitors.

#13 is the great Dave Alvin of Blasters fame, I believe.

#25 (untitled26) appears to be the identification guide for the 1000th issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Here’s the Dave Alwin picture

Mod Note

JNewstrom83 is in the middle of registering his name this morning. He didn’t remember his name from last year. But we’ll be $15 closer to that kidney operation that Cecil’s mother needs.

It’s Battlestar Galactica art by Ralph McQuarrie.

Oh wait, I’m wrong. It’s Frank Frazetta.

I’m quite impressed in the amount of shared knowledge in these boards - A couple more days and we’ll be completely done.

I have become a full fledged member and wish to thank you all for your work so far.

I will compile a full listing of information gathered from here as well as from email and my own webtravels sometime tonight.

Till then!

~John

A search of Richard Branson angel wings reveals that the Jan 1999 issue of Folio magazine, (no picture) contains a photo of him in angels wings- doens’t say if it is the same photo, or if the photo shoot was specifically for the magazine or previosuly published.
