Apparently, she died March 2. Hung hard with Orson Welles’ posse, 1949 Oscar for All the King’s Men, soft spot for James Dean in Giant, offered up obscene suggestions in The Exorcist.
And today (March 17th) is her birthday.

She CAN’T go to hell, otherwise she’ll always be sneaking over to the intercom and issuing hell-wide instructions to play nice and have ice-cream parties!
Aw maaaan…now I am well and truly depressed. Miss McCambridge was the (intended) recipient of one of the few fan letters I ever sent. I had just read her autobiography “The Quality of Mercy.” This was in the mid 90s and the book was published in 1981. I assumed she must have died in the intervening years, then on that year’s Oscar telecast they had an assemblage of the living winners and there she was. I couldn’t find an address for her so I sent the letter to the Academy. Years later I found out that they don’t forward mail, the bastards.
