Vote here: 'Album of the Year' Grammy for Eminem & 'Marshall Mathers'?

One vote here for “no”. Sheesh. Didn’t anything else happen in music last year?

Eminem is a great artist. He may say some things that are controversial, and he may piss a lot of people off. None of that takes away from the fact that he an extremely talented wordsmith and preformer. He worked himself up from nothing to get himself where he is now, and I say that he deserves every award that he gets.

Ugh, sign me up, DDG. I completely LOATHE Eminem. I think he’s a misogynistic, homophobic jackarse. He makes songs about killing his wife while his daughter watches-and people applaud this?
As much as I hate Christina Aguilera, I have to say, I do admire what she said when she was talking about Eminem on MTV-she said-“He sings songs about killing this girl-and she’s married? Girls, don’t ever let guys disrespect you like that!” And then he flips out because “She told everyone I was married!” Well, then don’t sing songs about killing your wife. He talks about how he wants to be a good role model for his daughter. WTF? I mean, if his idea of a good role model is someone who sings about killing and beating your SO, I’d hate to see what his idea of a bad role model is!

You know, I really don’t think he’s that great of a rapper. Now I’m not expert on rap, but I’ve listened to The Marshall Mathers LP a couple of times, and it just seems weak. Seriously, it’s not the worst rap album ever, but it’s certainly not the one rap album from 2000 that needs heaps and heaps of praise.

Another vote for no. I know that the Grammys have been to stodgy for a while, but this is too far the other way. Blech.

So I’m the only person that can’t help but love Eminem? I say give him a grammy.

I have to say, I don’t get the Eminem thing. And I see positive posts about him from several posters on this board whom I know by their previous posts are intelligent so I sense I’m missing something.

I’ve never been a rap fan, but it seems to me that a group like Public Enemy hit harder with a better sound and message easily. Ole’ Slim just talks and he doesn’t say anything worth hearing. And considering his recent legal problems he seems to be trying to actually live the life he talks about which means he’s going to hurt someone sooner or later or be a corpse himself. I don’t see what Eminem delivers that adds anything of value to the world.

No, no, no, no, no!

Even if he isn’t Satan’s gift to rap music, there has to be someone else more deserving, right?

One thing I really don’t get about him–you know that song “The Real Slim Shady” where he says something like “All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating”? I don’t get that. I wasn’t aware that there were a lot of Slim Shady imitators out there. Or is he just being egotistical?

Sorry. I think it is among the best albums out there this year. It’s been a very weak year. As a big Paul Simon fan, I think his new album pretty much sucks rocks. And Marshall Mathers LP is better than the teen bands even if I disagree with some of the subjects. The man has some talent.

The teen bands may be manufactored, but is that worse than rapping about having your friends gang rape your little sister on her tenth birthday?

Yes and no. I don’t care for the subject. Artistically, I would rather see epater le bourgoisie than five yobbos doing cheezy dance moves.

NO for Eminem.

YES YES YES to Jill Scott for Best New Artist. If she loses, I’m protesting the Grammies for the rest of my life!

In the year that pop music got way too much helium in the balloon, Eminem did much to pop the balloon and bring it down to Earth as did anybody else. He has the unique style of being egotistical and at the same time self-deprecating. Some of what he says is admiitedly unduly harsh and way off the cliff at times. However, there is nobody more deserving to win Album of the Year, except maybe for Radiohead’s Kid A. But the well-done music Radiohead made is too abstract for the voters. The album is for the total work on the album, not one or two songs and a lot of blech.

Duck Duck Goose, NSYNC and Destiny’s Child happened this year. They both had songs with three of the same words in the title, “Bye Bye Bye” and “Bills Bills Bills”. This is what pop music has come to.

Yes, Guinastasia, manufacturing bands is much worse than anything else, and I mean anything else, if what comes out are N’SYNC and the Spice Girls. If you can’t manufacture a group like The Monkees or Temptations, then don’t bother.

That being said, Eminem should take his own advice in his song “Stan” and mellow out with his next CD, or else he will find himself at the bottom of a river someday.

Has anyone here seen a little-known movie called Schindler’s List?

Did you really think that Liam Neeson was a Nazi?

It’s called a PERFORMANCE, people. And Mr. Mathers is a good performer.

And Liam Neelson can stand up and say “I am a actor.”

Ol Em has made it clear that he believes a lot of the crap he spews. Read the Rolling Stone interview.

And I agree with the earlier statement, he may be talented but he lacks focus. All he does is stand there and spews bile at everything that looks at him twice.

At least NWA had some charge to their rap. Gimme the days when Cube and Tea were only rap stars.

My wife likes Eminem, thinks he’s funny. She also likes DMX, though…what can I say, I just couldn’t find an old-school Metallica fan to marry. 8^(

Public Enemy…there was a Rap group with a message…that wasn’t completely idiotic.“fight the powers that be!!!”

Public Enemy had a message against racism. Sometimes it was a little over the top, but they had something to say and they had some good points. (I still want to attach a grandfather clock to Flavor Flav’s neck until he realizes that he looked like an idiot though.)

Eminem’s message is… well… um…

Folks keep saying Eminem has talent but I don’t see it. Talent at what? Lyrics? “Will the real Slim Shady Please stand up?” That’s a solid lyric? And in terms of being cool for just being repulsive he really didn’t even touch disembowelments. I could write more disgusting lyrics than he can and I could get up a stage and talk through them too. And I have very little musical talent - which still puts me in front of Slim.

Eminen COULD be good. He’s got a certain flair in his rapping style, but he’s so bent on being “out there” that he’s just puerile and annoying. In the same way that NSYNC panders to the heartstrings of young girls, he panders to the raging hormones of young boys. It’s just another sure-fire method of selling albums to kids who want to be naughty. The same is true for Limp Bizkit. They’re “controversial” to such an obvious extreme, it’s like being hit in the face with a frying pan. I guess a lot of folks prefer that prepackaged brand of rebellion, it’s a lot easier than coming up with your own reason to be angry. It makes me crazy that these bands complain about people complaining about them because they’ve worked so hard to get people riled up in the first place. I guess that’s part of the show, but it’s very weak.

As far as the Grammy goes, I’m not really sure what that award is for. If it’s for being a notable “artist” who’s made a splash this year, then Eminen is a reasonable choice. He belongs right up there with past winners like Toto and Bobby McFerrin. At least we can all breath a collective sigh of relief knowing that he’ll go away soon (maybe he and Vanilla Ice could be roommates after they’ve both killed their wives.)
