VP Debates Thread, or "Beauty and the Beast"

I assumed they were going to cover it in their regularly scheduled broadcast. I don’t know for sure though. I’m gonna watch, anyway.

As always, great commentary, folks.

Meh, interesting, like a 12-vehicle car wreck is interesting, but pretty much a draw, and as clear as can possibly be why neither of these pixies qualifies to be the actual President. They’ll be cleaning residual slime off both sides of that desk for the next three days, IMO. Would have killed either candidate to, just once in a while, actually ANSWER THE EFFING QUESTION PUT TO THEM?

Most telling moment (Cheney): Veep going on about how he was chosen by Bush in part because he had no ambitions for higher office, then immediately following that with how ready he was to take over in case anything, you know, happened to the pupp- I mean, President.

Most telling Moment (Edwards): “Let me tell you the truth”. How 'bout you just say whatever the hell you’re gonna say, and we’ll decide?

CBS’s poll…Edwards walked away with it. If I’m recalling right it was something like 46% Edwards, 29% Chaney, 21% tie. I would love to see these ‘undecided voters’ who they polled about it…I bet a bunch of them secretely see the waves of evil radiating off Chaney…

I thought Kerry won the first debate.

Looked to me like Cheney was slaughtering Edwards through the first half. Edwards displayed adaptability though and rallied to undo much of the damage, but I think it’s a pretty clear win for Cheney.

I almost fell off my chair when Cheney did the whole absentee thing and said this is the first I met the Senator and I’m in charge of the senate. Ouch!

Hmmmm, a “scientific” like/dislike meter. Isn’t that too much like a “laugh meter” from the Gong Show? Anyway, the “laugh meter” says Edwards won. Sorry, I didn’t see it as a runaway like the “laugh meter” shows it.

Damn, Edwards blew the flipflop question.

Even the sassy moderator said, “Isn’t a little flipflop good?”

Now they are arguing about individual flipflops. Edwards should have tried to disarm this criticism, because its the main premise that changing your mind is a bad thing. Edwards should have said this…
Chaning your mind in light of new facts…GOOD
Changing your mind in the absence of facts… NOT SO GOOD
Changing your mind for political purpouses…BAD
Not Changing your mind for political purposes…GOOD
Not Changing your mind in light of new facts…NOT SO GOOD
Not Changing your mind in spite of all evidence to the contrary… BAD
You can claim that Kerry is guilty of changing for political purposes. I will admit that, but Edwards could spin it as changing his mind in light of new facts and realities. A lot of Americans have done that, actually.

I wish he would have taken the debate to a higher level.

Wait… here’s edwards chance to shine… the closing statement.
ooohhhh its too good…

Cheney… No response to edwards closing statement so far.
He is pusing his experience strongly. He is insinuating that Bush has the only way to win the war on terror. He is also making good points. Reassuring that Bush is doing the right thing on the war on terror.
Interesting. My take is that nobody that is unimformed is going to determine what is fact or not considing the accusations made by each cantidate. Edwards didn’t really come out too well. Edwards strength is his empathatic qualities, and doesn’t really shine so much in these scenarios. Cheney was obviously able to show his strength, his experience and his knowldege of the “facts”

This is the exact opposite from the Bush/Cheney debate, because Bush is the charm guy and Kerry is the fact-man. These debates don’t lend very well to that strength. The only time he actually did shine was the closing statement. I think that will affect people. Cheney did make a very good “trust us” argument at the end too.

So who knows…Cheney was playing his strengths well, Edwards not so good. The facts seem to be pretty superflous, since who can tell what the truth is? They both accused each other of lying.

By the way, Edward’s pin is from his deceased son who died in a car crash. I forget what it was but he always wears it.

I don’t really expect it to change much. The problem is that Cheney isn’t running for president. He makes the president’s case better. Too bad he can’t sit in the Presidential debates! He also doesn’t get upset by being criticized like Bush does.

I as a liberal am not too enthused by the debate, but to me it seems like that Cheney won, but will it even matter? I remember how the Republicans said basically the same thing about the presidential debate. So I imagine that Cheney probably won. I am glad that Bush isn’t as smart or eloquent or collected.

Well, my white Iriish ass seems to have a common take on this.

Two buddies I’ve spoken to seem to think Cheney is the embodyment of “The Man”. Those buddies don’t have white Irish asses.

In this tie, I think Cheney lost with the non-Irish-white-ass set.

I didn’t know one could watch math on tv(Edwards’ father).

I thought Edwards sounded like a whiney, petulant child that wasn’t getting his way.

“Senator Gone” didn’t seem to be all there…

YMMV

They are covering it, and it’s hilarious so far.

Take your fingers out of your ears and come out of that cave!

Just a bit about Cheney devouring Edwards for his life force. Jon said they don’t give a f*ck and will be covering it tommorow. Settles it for me. Good night ya’ll

Yeah, Cheney has gravitas. Or, should I say, graveltas.

Edwards lacks that quality, though. He really does come across as a little bit too young and inexperienced to be prez. Infinitely preferably to the evil president that Cheney would be, but appearances are also important.

The debate was pretty much a draw. Kerry-Edwards have honesty on their side. Cheney performed well, but surely his obvious lies will dissuade a few more people from voting fascist this year. Edwards did OK, all told. He just needs to hone the edge a bit, that’s all.

dammit. TDS is prerecorded.

Oh that’s awesome! They covered it for a minute and a half and then said they didn’t give a f*ck, like the rest of America.

It wouldn’t have been as funny.

Edwards just got his ass handed to him — I can’t believe that he brought up Cheney’s gay daughther during the debate. Totally classless.

Interestingly enough (to me anyway), ‘biased’ Fox is saying its a tie…and that basically it doesn’t mean anything anyway, as far a momentum goes. They actually think Edwards held his own and did a good job. Strange…

MSNBC gives it to Edwards 72% to Cheney’s 28% :dubious:

Classless?? What debate were you watching? Edwards said he admired Cheney for his relationship with his daughter, and Cheney thanked Edwards for his comments.
