W2 forms

Why do companies give them out the very latest they can?

Is it possible to get them earlier?

I am leaving the state Jan 31st, and I know that they can foward it to my new address, but I kinda wanted to get it done and out of the way as soon as I could.
I don’t work for the company anymore, but I wanted to see if they could get it to me sooner. What do you think the odds are that they will do that for me? Who do I ask and what do I say?

Well, January 31st is the deadline for them to send W-2s out. In my experience, companies try and do this the soonest they can after the end of the prior year, because of the strict deadlines. Even in small companies where I’ve worked, the actual printing of the W-2s are done by outside payroll companies (the largest being ADP), therefore making printing individual W-2s before the rest, unlikely.

You could call their payroll department. Once they tell you they can’t do it any quicker, then try the HR Department and explain your situation.

However, the best course of action is going to be to simply make sure your change of address card with the USPS is correctly filled out.
