I miss Waffle House. It’s where my wife and I ate the morning of our marriage. Good times, y’all.
Umm being a cop and workin the night shift…the key is knowin the RIGHT waffle house.
Much as I dislike being called “Hon” or “Sweetie” by my college age server at most restaurants, it’s perfectly fine coming from the fifty-something (or looks like it), big haired WH waitress. Kind of like having your mom bring you food. Just don’t order the coffee!
The theatre performed in a music town at 3:00 am Sunday morning in the yellow building is priceless. In one, it was a standing joke with my friends and me, to order whole wheat or raisin toast with our meal. No matter what kind of toast we ordered, we got buttered white toast. But, then again, after a night of drinking and music, that could be quite entertaining. In another, a round of applause for the waitress when she hollered a complicated order to the grill man for a booth of five drunken musicians and got it right totally surprised her (especially when other patrons joined in). Counting the tattoos on the grill cook was another favorite pastime.
Now I’m hungry for a double order of scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, extra crispy.
I’ve driven many miles (as compared to someone my age that isn’t driving for a living) up and down the East Coast. I’ve always wanted to stop at Waffle House, but was always more interested in making good time. Stopping for 45 minutes to eat might literally make the difference between driving it all in a single day or having to spend the night somewhere.
Enter a child.
Once I had one of those, 2 days was clearly going to be necessary. Stopping at Waffle House was a mandatory, gotta-do-this-at-least-once-in-my-life stop. The food exceeded my low expectations, but I was definitely out-of-place. I did not fit in, but that may have been in my own head. The worst was that I had to change the baby and their bathroom had no changing table. It was dirty & unpleasant, but once I was over that, everything was smooth.
Lesson? It’s ok… it’s doesn’t rival a good NJ diner; and definitely don’t go for the low-rent bathrooms. I’d go again.
Us too! It wasn’t by choice, however: it was across the street from the hotel, and it was the only restaurant we could get to after an unexpected 7 inches of snow fell in Mississippi. It was good, though.
Just give me a Triple All The Way and keep the coffee full. Thanks, hon. I need nothing else to survive.
Bad experiences every once in a while are virtually inevitable when you have over 1500 locations… I try not to let one bad experience at one location spoil it all for me. I still love me some Waffle House. Glad to hear some of them have entered the present day and are (finally) accepting credit cards!
I love Waffle House. I also like Huddle House. Our local Huddle Houses were sold out and the new owners remamed them all Three Squares Diner. We eat there from time to time. Their food is actually better than both WH and HH but WH is still the only place you can get your hashbrowns scattered, covered, smothered, fried, died, layed to the side, whatever…
Speaking of diner type places, there is nuttin’ like those “meat and three” diner places for lunch or supper. I judge the quality of the place by what the waiterss says when I sit down. If the first words out of her mouth are “Whachoo gone have hon!” then I know it’s gonna be good!
I like breakfast at both HH and WH-it’s good and cheap. On road trips to Florida (down Rt. 95) I’ve noticed that there is usually a WH near a HH-the two look so similar-were they founded by the same guy?
My daughter and I visit our local WH every Friday morning before I drop her off at school. We sit at the bar (which she loves) and she eats all of her toast and mine. Service and food are very good. Wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

Well, WH is headquartered in a suburban area right outside Atlanta. I have even heard that no food vending is allowed on headquarters grounds, and employees are encouraged to go out and eat at an area Waffle House for lunch every day, but I don’t know if that is actually true.

That explains a lot.
