There’s new speculation out there about the FBI(?) investigating Petraeus’ biographer who apparently spent a lot of time with him and may have had access to his email and other classified material.
Yup. It’s being reported that he had an affair with the woman who wrote his biography. The affair supposedly came to light as part of an FBI investigation, but it’s not known what the FBI was looking into. If he was showing her classified material - stop giggling! - that’s something the head of the CIA shouldn’t do. He’s in charge of the national security apparatus, and you can’t go waving that thing around.
Curse you MOL, thanks to you I got sucked into watching a full 30min of Fox News.
In that 30min I heard: (And I’m not kidding)

What’s with the quotes? Are they suggesting the affair doesn’t even exist?

I just googled Paula Broadwell and discovered the name of her Petraeus biography website is “All In: General Petraeus.” Heh.

It’s being reported that the FBI stumbled across evidence of the affair while they were trying to find out if a laptop Petraeus used had been compromised.
As I understand it (largely from reading about it here on the SDMB) military officers found out to be having extramarital affairs can be charged with a crime (is that the same thing as being court marshaled?) and the results are often severe, including loss of rank, loss of certain benefits (pensions, etc.) and other dire consequences that a civilian would never have to worry about.
Since the affair clearly was ongoing while Gen. Petraeus was still active duty, are any of these punishments likely to be visited upon him, or is that typically something reserved for low-level officers with no political connections?
Yep, I know some people who are never going to stop talking about this. No matter what proof is offered, they will never believe that the president is not somehow personally responsible for these 4 deaths.
He’s probably the real Vince Foster killer, too.
On another board I have been perusing lately that is chock full of frothing mad righties, the theory (or fact of the matter, as they see it) is that the administration knew about the affair and tried to use it as leverage to get him to testify favorably. He announced the affair so that he could testify as he saw fit.
I think it’s common for a general to be charged with something embarrassing and serious, but not as embarrassing and serious as the real reason.
That’s what I’m reading. It’s pretty sad to me that so many people jumped to the conclusion that the woman in question was a cunt who was going to reveal the affair, rather than wait for more information.
We have far more precedent for Presidential administrations engaging in shady cover-ups than we do for Presidents secretly being foreign born.
And yet, that didn’t stop the crazy righties from shouting birther conspiracies from the rooftops. That they have created something marginally more credible this time is more luck than skill.
