Waiting for the phone to ring... (job interview)

I had an interview last week, and I really, really want the job. I’d be good at it, and I could (finally) feel good about what I’d be doing. This is the worst part–waiting for the call for the 2nd interview and trying not to get my hopes up too much.

::Pacing::

Anyone else waiting to hear about an interview? Pile on here and share your impatience!

No, but a funny story while you wait.

About two years ago this very month, I was going through the interview process to get the job I have now.

After the first interview, I was told someone would call me “Friday”. By Monday morning, I was on the phone with the man. We talked and said he’d call me the next day. Wednesday I called him and we set up a second interview that I had to WAIT 10 more days for. The next week he called me to ask to postpone that.

Finally, on the day of the second interview I was offered the job. I accepted, he said hang on a minute. Take the contract home, show your wife and he would call me tomorrow. This, so my wife could look over the contract that I would have killed her if she had had any problems with.

You guessed it, I ended up having to call him again.

I learned after I started here that he is notorius for being on the phone, and just generally being busier than anything. Before he left the district to take a suoerintendency somewhere else, he rang up more cell minutes than the next two highest people combined.

Ok, so in retrospect, not so funny, but it killed a minute or two waiting, didn’t it?

Ok, now I’ll concentrate on willing your phone to ring with good news.

scrunchy, concentrating face being made

Here I thought you were waiting for the phone to ring because it was going to be a phone interview. That kind of waiting is no fun either. I get ready a half hour before the call is supposed to come, am antsy for fifteen minutes, then I start reading something to kill time and am startled when the phone rings. When I hang up, I feel discouraged-- and grumpy. I handwrite thank you notes, put them in the mail, and go back to the looking for a job opening part.

But, one of those phone interviews in December paid off. (Either that or the people doing the hiring are not feeling well). They decided that they are willing to pay to fly me to a highly populous state I’ve never been to, pay for my lodging, pay for my food, and spend all day interrogating me in person. I’m petrofied-- and I’ve got two weeks to plan, stress, and prepare.

Still, I know what you mean about the waiting to hear part-- It’s been six weeks since that interview, and I just found out yesterday that another interview I had that week did not result in a job–and the other one seemed more likely to be one I was actually half-way qualified for. This one I’m not.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, the people who rejected me handwrote my name and spelled it wrong. Eureka ends in KA not C–I am female, thank you very much!

Well, the HR person did say that the interview would be with the department director, and that he has a very busy schedule. Maybe my resume is sitting on his desk with a gold star and a smiley and he just hasn’t had an opening in his schedule yet!

And, oh yeah–I hate phone interviews too. I had one of those for another job the week before last. I haven’t heard anything about that one either, but it’s not the one I really want.

Eureka, good luck with your interview!

Just a question…you’re not using a dial up modem to post here are you?

Of course! Why do you ask?

Well, we’re not waiting for a phone call now, but boy do I feel your frustration! About a year ago, hubby was interviewed for a job with the federal gov’t. He was assured by the person in charge of the hiring that he was a sure bet. But then her boss decided he had to micromanage things. Called hubby and gave him a phone interview, brought him in for a second interview. We wait, wait, wait, wait. Tap foot impatiently. Wait some more. As far as I know, because idiot senior manager insists on micro-managing (which he’s very bad at), that position never did get filled. Last July, he got another interview, same branch of the gov’t., and almost identical position. He was told he should hear something within a week. A week goes by. Two weeks. Three weeks. By then we assumed that they had hired someone else. Finally got, not a call as he’d been promised, but a letter. The letter said he’s made the first cut. He was told he’d hear something by the end of the week. He didn’t get the call offering him the job until mid-October.

The good news is that he’s now firmly ensconced in the job, and loving it!

Good luck!

I was in the same position about 20 years ago. I REALLY WANTED THE JOB! I called the VP I interviewed with every day for two weeks. She finally hired me and I was there 9 years. You need to decide if the Stalker approach will fly with this place. It can be rather off-putting with the wrong person. But it worked for me!!

I spent the last 14 or so months in that quandry off and on. I interviewed with about 10 places, applied at another 30, and spent hour upon hour on the phone, in a suit, or on my email.

Finally accepted a new position this morning. WOOHOO!

Good luck with your interview process!

I’m in the same situation. I had an interview Friday. I was told that they had more interviews scheduled for the first part of this week, then they’d be calling back for second interviews. I’ll probably call tomorrow afternoon if I haven’t heard anything.

StG

Not quite the same, but I applied to clinical psychology PhD programs, which are notoriously difficult to get accepted to, and I have been checking my phone, e-mail, and mail every day since too long ago. And will probably be doing so for the next month, if I don’t get any interviews.

What really sucks is that a good friend of mine is also applying to programs, some of them the same ones as I am. He’s seriously got about seven interviews lined up, and has had them for anywhere from a week to a month ago. And he’s already been on one. I am, to put it lightly, extremely anxious, sad, embarrassed, worried, and angry right now.

So WHY WON’T THE PHONE RING and just end the torture???

:frowning:

Last year I interviewed with a large local company, very reputable. I’m an HR manager and I interviewed for a - you guessed it - HR manager position there. The three people that interviewed me were the big dogs of the company. The last one is all over me with the questions, the conversation, the friendly chatting, blah blah blah.

We wrap it up, Big Dog #3 sends me off with her business card and says they will be making their decision by Monday of the next week (five days away at that point) and that she will call me as soon as their decision has been made. I ensure she’s got my cell phone number, yes, she does, I’ve got her business card in case I have any questions, all’s well, and I head out.

Monday comes and goes. Nothing. Well, I think to myself, could be tons of reasons for the delay. Don’t sweat it too much. I send Big Dog an excruciatingly polite e-mail inquiring about the status, and I include my cell phone number just in case.

Nothing. Tuesday goes by. On Wednesday, I call and leave her an excruciatingly polite and friendly voice mail on her work phone and cell phone inquiring about the status. Nothing. I call the next day, ring the operator and ask for one of the other Big Dogs. Voice mail. Ditto for the other Big Dog present at my interview.

Thursday, nothing. Friday, I send a follow-up e-mail with a cc to the other two Big Dogs.

Nothing.

To this day, I’ve never had even one reply from anyone at that company. That was over six months ago.

No, I’m not still waiting for a phone call.

I gave up last week.

I have a phone interview later this afternoon, and I’m very nervous. It’s for a big company and the job pays close to $15,000 more a year than what I’m making now. Man, that would be awesome. Plus, it sounds like an exciting job. Last week, the recruitment person called me at work. She asked if I’d rather she called me at home, and I said yes. We set up a time for her to call me at home later that day. She didn’t call. Friday came and went, and she didn’t call. I would have called her, but she didn’t give me a number. She finally called on Monday and I went through the preliminary interview yesterday. They’re interested. I really hope I get this job. Good luck to the rest of you, too!

Still nothing… I sent an email this morning (she asked for my most recent performance evaluation when it was available, and I just got it today), but didn’t get a reply. I may call on Friday if I haven’t heard anything.

Good luck everyone (and congrats interface2x!), and thanks for all the good luck you’re sending my way. Let’s hope the hoodoo works!

Update - Well, I have a 2nd interview on Friday. Go me!

StG

Yay, StG!

I, however, can stop haunting the phone–I got the dreaded letter today. Sigh.

Bummer!

I applied for a local government job in Nov. 2004. It was Jan. 05 before they’d give me the exam. I made that cut, had to take a typing exam in April. Passed that with flying colors, then around May I had an interview by three people. I figured I didn’t make it, until last September, I got called back for a second interview.

They finally sent me a letter last week that I didn’t make the cut. All this for a part-time, entry-level position.

Total turn around time: 14 months.

I hope you don’t wait that long for your phone call.

Oh holy heck!! We are going through the same thing in our household- My husband got laid off in August last year and was in the middle of a govt job interview process as well- he went to about 2 steps away from getting it and was declined.

He has been with two employment agencies- gone on one go-see with no luck-(the guy interviewing him was wearing an ac-dc t shirt, my dh was in a suit) He has a degree in MIS and still cant even get a call back (deep down I know it has a little to do with his personality- quiet, unassuming, shy not a self promotor and a little weird kind of like the unabomber, thats my nickname for him)
I’ve had two phone interviews in the last 6 days and the suspense is killing me though I was warned that they wouldnt call back until sometime next week.

If there interested, that is… :frowning:

Yeah. I just have to keep telling myself they don’t know what they’re missing, they’ll rue the day, etc.

Wow, Sausage Creature, 14 months?!?! My 10 days of suspense pale in comparison.
