Walking Dead filming at my high school

Fans of the Walking Dead series on HBO: It’s filming at my high school in Newnan, GA. My sister, who lives close by, reports that there is a big production crew on site and many zombies at the high school and the stadium. Shotguns are heard late into the night.

How I wish I had been able to score a role as a zombie extra. I’ve been perfecting my own distinct zombie shuffle.

Whoops. Walking Dead is on AMC, not HBO.

Newnan GA, is a code word in my family for “scary motel.” We stayed overnight once on our way to AL. I find this news to be hilariously appropriate.

Well, can’t argue with you there. My hometown has a dearth of motels, and the only ones we have fall into the category of “scary.” Now the nice people who live there in their own homes, different story.

Incidentally, we have a strong zombie history. A nice scene in the Woody Harrelson movie Zombieland was filmed there too – an abandoned tank and various dead bodies strewn in a street right off of the court square. Other movies, too. I was in a movie filmed at our high school way back.

Please share your scary motel experience.

I was just a little kid, so it’s hazy. But we were stopping late at night and found the only available hotel. When we got to the room, we noticed that everything was in early stages of decay: chairs, beds, drapes. There was no carpeting. Just rugs (and a few blankets) strewn about the floor. I didn’t see the bathroom because my mom said, “Don’t go in there.” Roaches and silverfish abounded. One of the windows was missing a pane. I think that the door didn’t lock, which combined with the missing window, was what really concerned us. And apparently there were people around outside that were skeeving out my folks.

So ever since, “Newnan” has meant “Scary Motel” to us.

My god, I can only imagine you stopped at one of the two motels on the outskirts of town, just off the expressway. I remember driving by them as a kid and thinking, “there must be crimes going on in in there.” I don’t know who normally stays there, but I would guess it’s Newnan’s fair allotment of skanky drug addicts and such. My apologies for your experience. You weren’t supposed to be there. You could have inquired in the lovely downtown and found a room for decent human beings.

But hey, you have a fun family memory!

Last month they filmed a scene on the road where my bank is, in Smyrna. They actually shut down about 2 blocks for 12 hours. I wonder if anyone in full zombie makeup went to the Hooters across the street for lunch?

I sure hope season two is a hell of a lot better. Both the pacing and character motivations were a mess in season one. I want to like this show.

I agree. I sooo wanted to like this show. And I did like the first episode or two. Then I wanted more zombies and fewer interpersonal dramas among the non-zombies. That first episode where he offs the child and the crawling half-zombie, after expressing his sympathy to it, was on the money. After that, the show fell off sharply.
And that ending with the CDC self destructing was so incredibly cliched and hokey that it really just about ruined the whole thing for me.
But damn, I still like me some zombies.
