Walmart email about adding a credit card to wallet

On Feb. 13, I got an email from Walmart saying:

Hi, Marine_One
Thank you for adding a credit card to your wallet.

I replied asking what is this?
Their reply was: “Please note this is an automatic reply from an unmonitored mailbox.”

So on Feb. 14, I got this email:

On Tuesday, February 13th, you may have received an email from us as a Lowe’s Advantage Cardholder saying a credit card was added to your wallet. This email was sent in error. Rest assured, this email is not a sign your credit card has been compromised.

Anybody else get this? Or was it just me?

Spam. There’s lots of these. I’ve been getting one asking me to update my Walmart membership. Whatever that is. I’m not a member of Walmart in any way.

I get something from Lowe’s as well. Wanting me to call and re register (?) my card for an credit line increase. I don’t have a Lowe’s card.

Phishing for your info.

Block and delete

The Feb. 14 email has:

…you may have received an email from US…

Does this mean sent by Walmart? And it says This email was sent in error.

By Walmart? Why not just say it was a phishing email?

Anyway, next time I’ll copy the header and send it to someone at Walmart that cares.

I’m half expecting an update that Marine_One got an email asking for his CC#, expiration date and 3 number code to confirm they did not add the credit card to their account.

First of all, just because an email says it’s from Walmart (or Amazon, or PayPal, or…) doesn’t mean it really is. Phishing scams send email purporting to come from someplace like that, but if you carefully check the sender’s email and/or the links they want you to click, they are from some other source. They’re hoping you click those links, think you’re at a trusted site, and enter personal information like a password or credit card number.

If it weren’t for the followup, I would have strongly suspected that the first email described by the OP was a phishing email. But it might have been just what the followup email says: an email sent in error.

In either case, it would be totally normal for the email not to be replyable-to. And in either case, the email could safely be ignored, as long as you hadn’t already clicked a link and entered some private info.

If you have a Walmart account, log into it and see what is on your account. If there are no changes or notices there, then this is almost surely a scam. If you don’t have a Walmart account, this is a scam.

Never click on links in emails, always go to the sites directly through your browsers.

You can go to walmart.com and check if a credit card has been added to your wallet:

I trust almost nothing that lands in my inbox other than a notice that something I know I ordered has been shipped. I think it’s a good policy.

A week ago Sunday I received an email from Office Depot thanking me for signing up for a free trial of their “Business Select Program” - whereby you get discounted pricing on some products, but after the 1st month you get charged $49/yr. But I never signed up. I didn’t see the email until the next morning, when I also received an email correction stating:

Dear Valued Office Depot Customer,

You may have inadvertently received an email in the last 24 hours indicating you started a free trial membership in the Office Depot OfficeMax Business Select program. The email was sent in error, and we apologize for any inconvenience or confusion it caused. We want to assure you that if you did not actively enroll in Business Select, you are not enrolled in the program, nor will you be charged an enrollment fee. We value your business and are committed to ensuring a better experience in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
Office Depot
