Wanna rescue a dog?

I got an email from my sister this morning, which she forwarded from a friend of hers. There’s a dog in our area (Midwest) in need of a good home, and I’ve been asked to help in the search (my landlord doesn’t allow pets, or I’d consider it myself). I thought I’d throw it out here in case anyone is interested (Mods, hope this is okay).

Here’s the text of the email she forwarded:

The 217 area code appears to be a stripe across the center of the state of Illinois. I have the pictures, but nowhere to put them up. If anyone wishes to be kind enough to host them, drop me an email at sj3dg4r @ yahoo . com and I’ll send them to you. Alternatively, if anyone wants them emailed, hit me at the same address.

I realize this is a bit of a long shot, and I don’t know any of the people involved (well, I’ve met my sister before :)), but I thought I’d put it out here in case it works.

Thanks.

What does “against my contract” mean?

Daniel

I don’t know. As I said, I don’t know any of the people involved other than my sister. The email came from someone she knows from dog obedience classes (she’s got two dogs herself).

I’ll ask, though.

Makes sense. I work for an animal shelter, and the email raises some of my hackles, but obviously it ain’t the dog’s fault; I hope it finds a great home!

Daniel

If you email me the pictures- weirddave00 at Yahoo dot com- I’ll post them for you.

Yuck. :frowning:

Here’s my sister’s response to the contract question:

Weirddave, I’m sending them to you now. Thanks a lot for helping.

There are online dog adoption places where you can list animals… have you tried any of those?

I don’t know if they have, Opal. If you’ve got some links, I can email them to Sister.

I don’t know any off hand, I just know I’ve encountered them. Maybe google for pet adoption and throw in words like gallery or photo?

I am pretty confused right now. Why doesn’t Lesley take the dog back?

A good online adoption site is petfinder.com, it’s probably the biggest one out there.

Hi there,

http://www.siberianrescue.com/

Here is a place to start. Please consider rescue for your dog. They foster dogs in people’s homes and carefully scrutinize potential adoptive families. They cannot take a known biter, but this is common practice in all rescue groups.

Also, if you have a contract that states you cannot place the dog in a animal shelter, my guess you got the dog from a reputable breeder. This is a common practice amongst people who love breed dogs. Many will gladly rehome a dog they have brought into the world…it’s part of what they believe their responsibility is to their dogs. Please contact the breeder and let her/him know of your situation. Many breeders are also active in their breed’s rescue organizations; this person may have rescue contacts of her/his own.

Best of luck.

Here, I threw together this webpage. It’s quick and dirty, but it should help give people the right idea.

My impression is that the person in question bought the dog from Leslie and is hoping to get some money for the dog. This is a total WAG, but that is how it struck me.

I don’t know that, either; but the question has been forwarded and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear something. My guess is close to weirddave’s: the current owner wants money and Lesley isn’t currently in a position to buy Dakota back.

That’s a guess, though. I’ll let you know what I find out. Thanks to everyone for their help.

On the other hand, if the owner is willing to dump Dakota on a shelter, money may not be the hurdle. Perhaps Lesley just doesn’t have room for another dog right now.

My parents live in Arkansas, visit the 217 area code often, and have owned a husky before. I’ll ask them.

Just to let everyone know, the question of why Lesley doesn’t take the dog back has been forwarded, but we haven’t heard anything back so far this evening. I’ll keep you posted.

Oh, and weirddave, you rock. Thanks loads for helping out (and Opal too, for the space).

I’m keeping fingers crossed.

Happy to help. One request, could you let me know when the dog finds a home so I can take down that page? It’s using almost 10% of my webspace.

Sure, no problem. Here’s an update from Lesley about her taking the dog back:
