It’s a horrific story, and perhaps I shouldn’t even say this, but: damn that thread title sure is a catchy headline. Cracked me up, until I read it was actually true, of course.

While the facts of this case certainly don’t make humanity look good, at least this thread shows some progression.
Why? Because it’s been 15 hours since someone’s mentioned “throw away the key” and no one yet has suggested the merits of compulsory buggery! There IS hope!

As to the sociopath/psycopath distinction–I had always heard that a psycopath doesn’t differentiate between right and wrong while a sociopath can, but just doesn’t give a damn. Was that completely off-base?

One distinction that I’ve heard is that they are the same thing, except a psychopath is violent.
Sociopaths don’t necessarily going around killing people - they just do things to further themselves without concern for others - that doesn’t necessarily mean offing people.
Psychopaths, OTOH, are violent.
Hmmm… I guess that’s what I get for reading so many trashy crime novels.

IANAD, but the way I understand it, a sociopath is someone who wants not only to “pass” in society, but to elevate himself in it. A psychopath only conforms as much as he has to to escape detection.
Jayson Blair might be a sociopath, on the grounds that he was willing to stop at nothing to further his ambition. I don’t remember the official ruling on Ted Kazcyinski, but he probably falls into the psychopath category because he completely withdrew from society. I’ve heard Jeffrey Dahmer referred to as a sociopath, but that doesn’t sound right: he had no ambitions and was distinctly lacking in charm. Sociopaths can charm the wallet out of a Scotsman’s pocket (no offense to any Scots here!).

I’ve joked about bumping a woman’s car just so we’d have to get out and exchange info, but I never thought of actually running one over. This is, um, a bit extreme.
What a truly great age we live in, when news of unimaginable weirdness such as this can be disseminated to the far corners of the world in mere moments.
Perhaps it is a great age, neuroman, when people like this get held up to public shame and ridicule.
It’s not like this guy wouldn’t have been shamed and ridiculed 30 years ago, it’s just that probably not nearly as many people outside of his state would hear about it.
