Want to avoid silly love songs

I’m in the process of burning a custom CD for the reception after my upcoming nuptuals with TheLadyLion and am looking for suggestions. I’m trying to avoid triteness while doing my best to please the crowd. Okay, so that means anything by Dave Brubeck where the time signature is in prime numbers is out. So you can’t dance to Take Five, nothing to get worked up about. I’ll save that for the car.

So far I’ve got some interesting and eclectic selections that shouldn’t alienate anyone. Stuff from Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys doing San Antonio Rose to angst king Joe Jackson’s Love is Stranger Than Fiction. We picked up a discount bin love songs CD with some very good cuts like You Wear it Well, Your Song and Poco’s Crazy Love.

So I’m asking the collected musical tastes of the SDMB to come up with some more selections before I burn the CDs. I don’t anticipate needing more than a few hours of music. So far have over an hour but want to avoid having the same artist repeated too many times. We also have an hour of live entertainment, we’ve booked white blues mama Candye Kane who frequently appears in Phoenix. She was at a friend’s wedding a few months ago and agreed to do our wedding if she could book a performance in Phoenix that night.

FWIW none of the music is pirated. LadyLion or I own every CD going into the final mix.

Our first dance was to Peter Himmelman’s “With You”, off his album Skin. It’s a truly gorgeous song, and not at all cheesy.

If you’ve got any, Frank Sinatra has some beauts, and Van Morrison’s “Moondance”, though not strictly a love song, is very danceable.

You want to avoid silly love songs? But … but …

Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what’s wrong with that?
I’d like to know,
'Cause here I go
Agaaaaaaaaain …

On the serious side, “Storybook Love” from the soundtrack of “The Princess Bride” is pretty good. Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits fame) did the arrangement; it’s performed by Willy DeVille

Sauron, you pretty much nailed the reason right there. However I may play Linda Mac singing I’m the Cook of the House when I want everyone to leave. I had considered pretty much anything by Yoko Ono for that purpose but someone might hear and assume I’m strangling a baby… with a cat and call the police or PETA.

Thanks for the feedback. I did plan on adding Van Morrison to the mix. Also need to find some classic motown like The Four Tops’ I Can’t Help Myself.

Not terribly hard to do-- instead of counting 1, 2, 3 as you would a waltz, just count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5:wink:
While I can’t think of any specific artists names, maybe some female artists from the 70’s.

Actually a few cuts from Carole King’s Tapestry will be included and I should probably add some by homegirl Linda Rondstadt.

“I’ve been cheated! Been mistreated! When will I be loved?”

What?

Both LadyLion and I each have a well developed sense of humor so it would be a hoot to put Love Stinks on the CD but the extended families may not think so.

One thing I want to find is the traditional version of La Bamba done by Los Lobos in the movie, in the scene in the TJ whorehouse. The soundtrack CD only shows the Ritchie Valens version (which of course was also done by Los Lobos).

Padeye–may I suggest “Time In New England” and “Can’t Smile Without You?” by Barry Manilow as well as “The Beast” by Concrete Blonde and “When You Think About Love,Think About Me” by Dolly Parton?
On the cd played out our wedding CG and I had a multitude of diverse lovey music that wasn’t too sappy. Those five songs were on there, among others.

Good luck!

Steely Dan is a multi-age crowd pleaser.

Might I suggest the Skydiggers, esp. Slow Burnin’ Fire.

Not unless you want the marriage to lead to a “Haitian Divorce”…

[sup]I’ll be here all evening folks…don’t forget to tip your waitress[/sup]

Actually Steely Dan is my #1 favorite band of all time but not a lot of songs lend themselves to the love theme. certainly not Hatian Divorce but will be playing Pearl of the Quarter and asked Candye if she could cover it for us.

Hawkmoon 269 by U2. That song has the word ‘love’ sung about 50 times, and it’s got Bob Dylan on organ. Off the Rattle and Hum album.

Hmmm…

How about Gimme Some Lovin’ by The Spencer Davis Group?

Steve Winwood on keyboards and lead vocals…

“Attics of My Life” by the Good Ol’ Grateful Dead!

“When I had no wings to fly…you flew to me”
