Wanted! City of Heroes Players!

Wow. Reading more, they literally had everything. Every Character on every server in your account was available with every add on. All that was missing was the Influence and you got 2 billion when you logged in. Even supposedly a new Class that had never left an Alpha stage but was in the code.

Ironically even if I had access I wouldn’t because I have no idea what my account password was.

Maybe it was kept secret because it would/will likely be shut down if it was known. How long before NCSoft (or whoever owns the IP) starts sending shutdown notices? The leaker, Destroyer Stroyer, is likely destroying it for the players with access. It’s a dumb move, by Stroyer and whoever gave him access.

Also, how the fuck was he lied to? City of Heroes was shut down. Someone got source code, hacked or reverse engineered, and tried to avoid the inevitable cease and desist by keeping the user community on a private server as small as possible. Now, due to the leakers, it’s probably over. Idiots who can’t keep their mouths shut, thinking their doing the community a service.

I think that the goal here is a true resurrection of the game. Keeping his mouth shut wouldn’t have led to that. Releasing the information, however, just might. I expect that the most likely avenue would be that the people who currently run the secret server would ask for subscriptions and/or donations, and pay some token amount to NCSoft that isn’t very much, but is more than the zero they’re getting now.

Maybe but people tried buying the IP and program from NCSoft back then and they refused to sell it.

I suppose maybe they’d be more open to it six years later but I wouldn’t bet on it.

While it’s an interesting story, I can’t imagine that I’d want to play a dead MMO for six years with no new content or development. “Well, that’s another maxed out level 50 to add to the pile…”

That might possibly have been his wish, but given NCsoft’s disinterest in losing control of their IP (and disinterest in resurrecting the original game), I suspect it’s more likely that this’ll end with the cease-and-desist order, and the end of the private server.

I think that the guy who leaked it was either (a) naive about how NCsoft would react to the news, or (b) intentionally being a dick and screwing over the players on that private server, by getting it shut down.

I’ve heard (but not confirmed) that the source code has been released so that others can set up servers and the players left jonesing for a good superhero MMORPG can get ripped off by servers popping up for just that purpose while servers set up simply to play the game will keep getting c&d orders.

The way you wrote your post totally reminded me of this old Onion article:

I think what is really pissing people off is that it wasn’t just the code, it was the complete live version of the game with all their old characters intact. Word is its actually gotten updates and even an extra class. This is one of the most missed dead games out there, that there’s been a secret version for about as long as the game was alive has to be a bitter pill to swallow.

Apparently everyone can play now?

Articles I’ve read don’t say new code, just code that hadn’t yet been publicly released. That’s a big difference from updates. But I’m not downloading it nor planning to play, so maybe there had been something akin to a modding community working on the game.

Reading extensively on this subject and it seems like there’s a chance it’s actually going to come back in some form, possibly very soon.

Thank goodness. I was able to play for a couple of days and I was having a blast. The graphics are dated of course but the customization and gameplay are still extremely fun. I’d pay to play this game if they brought it back. I pledged to CoT and I’m waiting for that release but this game would tide me over until then.

DCUO and CO just aren’t as good, frankly, either in customizing power sets or playing the game.

Servers have been up for a few weeks. They are up to five servers to handle the load.

I have read several articles and it is still not clear to me exactly how one gets to take part in this Resurrection of the game.

Do you need to have a record of your original user name and password to access your old characters? Can you access your old characters?

Graphics are the last thing I’m worried about. When I played, it was on my 2008 iMac. I’ve since upgraded to a Windows gaming machine from CyberpowerPC, so I’ll probably see better graphics than I had before, if I can get in.

(I finally had to cave in and switch to Windows last year. I’ve played World of Warcraft since 2008 - on that same iMac - but Apple had abandoned OpenGL and my machine couldn’t upgrade to their new “Metal” graphics API. Blizzard forced WoW to keep working with OpenGL for as long as they could, but they finally had to drop it, and so I had to upgrade if I wanted to keep playing WoW.)

Any place with detailed instructions on how to get in? I have the client installed, but have no idea how to create a new account.
When NCSoft killed CoH, I swore they’d never see another dime from me, and I’ve stuck with that. Them bringing it back, or allowing somebody else to run it legally, would make me rethink that.

The instructions were earlier in this thread (that’s how I learned how to play) but I’ll help you out.

The instructions are written here, in detail:

It sounds like you have Tequila installed. To create an account, first create a forum account for the forum I linked above. Then sign into the forums. Then go to the game account creation page:
https://score.savecoh.com/account/

Once your account is created there, you can log into the Homecoming servers with those credentials. Pick one of the five servers (or more, they’re multiplying) and make a character and play!

is there anyplace to dl the base game? we never owned the disc and just dled it off the website …

Follow the instructions in the thread I linked to above. Everything you need is there. Including the game client.

oh cool i thought id be like UO or SWG where you had to pay a fortune for a game disc on ebay

Nope!
