I definitely want to try out City of Heroes, but I want to get some reviews on it first. I was stoked for Star Wars Galaxies until I heard it was more Everquest just with lightsabers. But if it sounds like it turned out well and the price is right, I’ll join up.
What Max Carnage said. I’m not buying another MMORPG until it’s been out for at least a month. I got burned by Galaxies, too – initial word-of-mouth was almost universally positive, and it wasn’t until I’d already bought it and played a week or so that I realized it wasn’t finished and wasn’t headed in the right direction regardless.
But City of Heroes definitely sounds interesting, and Freedom Force has already broken the SuperHero Game Curse. I can’t imagine how a superhero game where everybody’s a superhero would work, exactly, but it’s worth a shot.
And I’d be willing to be at least a sidekick on the Fighting Dopes.
I can’t promise anything at this time, but I like the idea of a Dope Teem that’s out to save the world from Ignorant Villians.
Just to warn you, my style of play is both competitive (I’m out to ‘win’, i.e., advance tactically in the game) AND tongue-in-cheek, wise-cracking, self-referential, multi-allusional satirical fun.
There is alot more bad things in SWG than there is good, but saying its EQ with lightsabers is pretty much entirely wrong. Its UO in space, and lightsabers are only for those dedicated enough to spend months leveling classes in order to unlock a jedi slot. It sucks, but for the reasons you thought
I’m in the beta now – all preorder customers get into the beta, so I’m not particularly special in this regard.
I’m also in the World of Warcraft beta. It’s kind of interesting to compare the two. WoW, as a Blizzard game, has an excellent UI, lots of very good engagement mechanisms (near-constant rewards/improvement, for one thing), no loss of xp or penalty on character death (you can choose to trade off xp for immediate resurrection, or walk to your corpse as a ghost).
CoH, on the other hand, has… superheroes.
I spent several hours playing CoH last night.
If anyone else is playing, look me up – my level 5 Science Blaster “Temperator” could use some help clearing out the bad guys.
I’ve got the Beta, too, and so far I like it. Granted, I haven’t done much other than kill a crap-load of muggers and gang-bangers, but it’ve gotten two levels doin’ it! I will say, though, that the game looks amazing. In addition, if you go to www.cityofheroes.com, you find out there is a HUGE history associated with the world of the game, and I’m sure lucky players might get to take part in it, as well.
I’ve got two characters now. I can definetly say that some types are better suited to group play than others. I currently am a level 4, mutant blaster known as Novalis…I think that’s his name, I really can’t remember. But my other (lesser-played character) is a level 2 science tanker called “Levinworth.” I plasy on the Prime server, so if you’re playing the beta don’t hesitate to come fight evil with me.
Man, I’d love to. I’ve been watching the website and forums for this game for months (others have been there for up to two years), and had sort of planned to make it my first MMO game. But I’ll need to upgrade my machine in a couple of ways before the game could possibly run well, and I can’t really afford that. As soon as possible, though.
Maybe I’m being too subtle. What I was trying to imply is that, although World of Warcraft is a very cool game with a great UI, there is something very important about the subject matter of a game.
I like fantasy. I like superheroes more.
And right now, I love being able to run up to a couple of gangbangers doing a drug deal with a pusher and shoot a fireball at them.
I can’t say much about the game – there is a fairly comprehensive NDA for playing in the beta – but I will say that I am enjoying it a lot.
If you like superheroes, if the idea of roleplaying super-people taking down bad guys in small teams sounds like fun to you… then I think you’d like City of Heroes.
I’ve been playing the hell out of this game ever since early last week, when I (finally) got my invite. I’ve got a level 6 Science Blaster named, appropriately enough, Lightnin’.
Sure, being able to throw lightning bolts is fun, but his best ability is Power Thrust- I LOVE being able to punch the bad guys and knock 'em across the street. I also just got my first movement power: Combat Leaping. I can’t quite jump over buildings, but I can easily scale them now.
Look me up. I could certainly use the help, since those zombies are starting to get *tough[/I[. Ya’ll think we could have a team named “Friends of Cecil”, or “Warriors Against Ignorance”?
Been in the beta for a few months. The game’s a blast. I just last night got teleportation for my hero (level 14, mainly a healer), and I’m loving it.
One of the things I can definately recommend about the game is- if you’re a combat MMORPGer, there’s lots to do- the game is rather ‘beat the villain’-based. However, there -are- storylines out there if you look for them (my hero and a few others, who actually do RP, not just combat, are currently trying to puzzle out the motives and plans of two different villain organizations. We’re trying to steer ourselves towards missions that will let us find out more about them.)
All of the beta heroes, I believe, are going to be wiped before release, but when the actual game starts up, I’ll post here as to what / whom I’m playing, and maybe we can all work for justice in the name of Cecil!
Not sure on the monthly fee. It may be $15 a month – I’m seeing that on the forums, but haven’t found an official announcement of cost.
If you get a pre-order box today, it’ll include the pre-order key necessary to set up an account. You should get invited within a couple of days – the original promise was that all pre-order customers would be invited to beta by 4/7 (and I was), but I would imagine that new pre-orders would be invited on a daily basis.
I’m really liking it. It’s keeping me away from World of Warcraft, which is saying something.
No villains, no PVP. There are rumors that later expansions will allow for ‘danger room’-type areas where PVP can be done. As of now, like one of the developers has said it, it’s a city of HEROES.
(Funny side note- long ago in beta there were crashes where all the AI controlled people would vanish from the city, leaving it, quite literally, a city of heroes.)
