Wanted: Music associated with movies with mostly male casts

Some friends of mine are putting together a dance show with a movie theme. A group of male dancers is looking to put together a medley of songs to perform to. They are looking for music that, when you hear it, instantly reminds you of a movie that had a mostly male cast, or otherwise seems like a “male” movie. They are looking for lots of suggestions, as they want to be able to make a short segment medley. And not necessarily all the same feel - they would like to mix up the feel and speed as the music changes. They don’t have to be recent movies, but it would be better if they are well known.

They’ve asked me for suggestions. I’m having trouble coming up with enough music that is connected enough with a movie. I can come up with plenty of music that comes from suitable movies, but they don’t have that instant “hear this song, think of the movie” grab they are looking for.

Any suggestions? I’d like the song/music title (artist if you know it would be nice) and the movie (in case I don’t recognise the song by name, which happens a lot with me).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Start with the soundtrack to Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Oh, and “You Sexy Thing” from The Full Monty.

The theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly?

1776! Which was indeed a movie!

And there’s also a Broadway version of The Full Monty, with some great guy songs like ‘Michael Jordan’s Ball’ and ‘Big Ass Rock’. And the Broadway Titanic, with some great male duets. Never mind that it came out and won the Tony before the movie, most people will think of the movie.

“Little Green Bag” by the George Baker Selection, from Reservoir Dogs.

Martin Sheen directed himself, son Charlie and Laurence Fisburn in the not very successful Cadence which is set in a military prison. It features a great version of Chain Gang. Cool Hand Luke you say and everyone thinks of Plastic Jesus

All the Rocky stuff of course - Eye Of The Tiger.

Born To Be Wild from Easy Rider

Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, from Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

Hey, I think it’d be great.

Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph & By Jeeves were my first thoughts.

Happy 58th B-day, Andrew Lloyd Webber

West Side Story

Assassins

Happy 75th B-day, Stephen Sondheim

The Magnificent Seven (Dunt-da-da-dunt! da-da-da-da–dunt!)

Doesn’t get more manly than that! Plus, the score by Elmer Bernstein was nominated for an Oscar.

1- Reservoir Dogs had an all-male cast. Try “Stuck in the Middle With You”!

2- **The Bridge on the River Kwai ** had an all-male cast. You could use the “Colonel Bogey March.”

The Boys in the Band – but then, it’s not a musical.

Another:

This Is Spinal Tap was almost all male (if you exclude Janine). How about “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight” or “Big Bottom” or “Sex Farm”?

How about the choral stuff in The Hunt for red October?
(or the Mines of Moria sequence in LOTR:FOTR?)

Brian

Pie Iesu domine, (whack!) dona eis requiem (whack!).

The Longest Day

The theme from The Great Escape.
