I think the backlash against the McConnells will be severe. If and when the full story comes out on this, and it becomes obvious that the GOP decided to put party WAY before country, it’s going to be a problem.

I liked this part of Trump’s response to the report: “The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history.” Uh, what? How did he vault into “one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history”? He won a fairly close EC contest.

Out of the 57 presidential elections in US history, only 11 contests were won by a smaller percentage of the Electoral College than Trump/Clinton. Both of Obama’s victories were bigger than Trumps, just for starters.

This is probably bigger than Watergate, but how many will notice (he asks, tongue-in-cheek)? My cynical side is resigned to this resulting in nothing beyond ugly social media wars. I’m struck by how this story broke on Friday night, traditionally the day when news is dumped. Trump supporters I know won’t even consume news from WAPO, WSJ, NYT, CNN, etc. Whatever spin Breitbart/Alex Jones/InfoWars puts on this is what they’ll believe.

I disagree; I don’t think the right cares about what their leaders do as long as they can stick it to the libtards.
In my opinion, Ryan, McConnell and the rest of the Republicans are far too Vichy to rise up and do what’s right. These days they are busy rubbing their hands together thinking about how they can sock it to everyday Americans and enrich themselves and their billionaire benefactors and not at all concerned about what’s really happening.
When they finally wake up it will be too late.

If the man wasn’t such an egomaniac, he’d say something like he was concerned about the Russian invasion of US private e-mails and would ask the intelligence agencies to produce a comprehensive report on a crash basis. The whole thing, no matter what the conclusion of the report, would blow over for Trump. Probably not for USA-Russia relations though.
We’ve seen Trump double down before and then back off when his handlers made him see the light. Could happen in this case unless he is actually too deeply in debt to the oligarchs of Russia.

The nice thing about getting a massive dump of internal communications like this is that it’s trivial to spin wool out of nothing. It’s trivial to find something that seems bad, even if there’s nothing there, even if it’s all completely innocuous, or at least thoroughly normal, the internet will find something. If you disagree, one word: Climategate. There was nothing there, and yet denialists will still cite it as though it had proven once and for all that climate change was a hoax.
IIRC, the earliest reports of skullduggeriski centered around Wikileaks of the DNC dissing Bernie Sanders. Which would mean to me that whomsoever wanted to exacerbate the conflict in the Dem Party between Clinton and Bernie.
Did it work? Dunno, really, my personal impression is that it did at least to some degree, I recall reading any number of Bernie people referencing it as proof that Bernie wasn’t getting a fair hearing.
