Warm (or hot) hands at will

Hi gang,

Just to preface the question- I have no belief in healing or other forms of that nonsense, so this is not a question about that

A few months ago, at a festival, I met this fellow who had, what I surmise is called warm (or hot) hands, in which he seemed to be able to raise the temperature of his hands at will. He demonstrated this skill on me, by having me place one of my hands between his, then he told me he just had to concentrate and after a few seconds (hard to say exactly, maybe ten or so) his hands gave of a rather warm glow, enough to warm my hand up by what felt like a significant amount of degrees. (This was at an outdoor festival, so my hands were quite cold at the time - I guess this could be a factor in why it felt hot, but it felt much hotter than I would expect from a person just holding his normally warm hands in the vicinity of mine, and I distinctly felt the temperature rise sharply after a little while.)

There were a distance of about 2-3cm between my hand and his hands,so there was no direct contact.

Now, in trying to google this phenomenon I only seem to find sites discussing healing and similar flim-flam, in which quite a number of healers claim a similar ability (but they also of course claim that their hot hands aid in healing).

Is there anybody on this board who has any more information about this type of thing? Is this something many people can do, or just a few? Are there any studies done into how this is achieved?

Note: The guy was quite clear on not being a healer or any such nonsense, he just had the ability to raise the temp in his hands.

It’s actually pretty easy to develop this skill. There are biofeedback machines designed to help you develop this ability. There are even computer peripherals that are packaged with software that help develop it.

You don’t really need any of that, though. You can just sort of focus your mind in your hands, and they will get warmer. I’ve developed the skill myself, to some degree.

Wim Hof actually has a book about this skill (the whole body warming, not just the hands), he’s actually quite good at it.

The Tibetans have a technique the call Dummo, which is similar to what Wim Hof, does, I believe.

That’s the Wiki on Wim Hof.

Here’s a link to his book on Amazon.com

There’s a lot of “woo-woo” and BS spirituality surrounding these practices, once you stray away from the area of biofeedback. The skill of guys like Wim Hof and some Tibetans is indeniable, though.

Yep, it’s entirely possible. I can do it, although I’m out of practice. How do I do it? I dunno…I just do it.

Note, however, that he cheated a little bit. If you were in cold air, the very act of placing your hands near his meant that you were, together, warming that small gap of air between you, and losing less heat off your hands than if you held them away from your bodies.

Another Doper with some ability to do this at will. I find it useful on cold days, although it does take a little concentration. It’s not magic, it’s a skill that probably anyone with normal circulation could learn if they wanted to make the effort.

Thanks for the replies

Interesting that (at least) three dopers can do this as well. I guess I have to start practicing then, and see if I can perhaps do it myself. Googling Biofeedback and the names provided will give me some more usefull info than the healer-type sites.

Have a good time.

Report back when you have something interesting, or accomplish something interesting. I’d be willing to read what you have to say.

may also be called Tummo.

Yeah, but the pronunciation is closer to Dummo, as I understand it.

I don’t speak Tibetan, though.
